A Recruiting Philosophy

Five-Star Recruit
There has been much ado about Freeman changing his mind. There have been others and there will be more who change their mind, because that's the nature of this business. If we sign someone who has comitted with another team, it's wonderful; if we get a commitment from a player and he then signs elsewhere, we're depressed and sometimes angry.

My take on this is that the best players for our future are those who really want to be here, meaning no misgivings. Better they bail before signing than later when we've put a lot of energy into their development. This period, before the sign date, is a great time to let the process WEED OUT those who don't have their heart with OUR program. We must have the attitude that occurs when a player gets injured; it's going to happen and that is what back-ups are for. If a player is not commited with his heart he should be encouraged to move on. Always look forward and never regret!

i couldn't agree more.

i have been reading the book "What it Means to be a Husker" and am amazed at the heart and desire that some of htese people had just trying to make the team.

Good post Roy. People need to keep in mind that these recruits have usually researched the schools they are looking at, know exactly what kinda playing time they will get from the talks they have with coaches, what positions they could be playing, whether a school has a particular major they plan on majoring in just to name a few. If a kid chooses another school, just move on (unless it's Josh Freeman :smokin )

Totally agree Roy. Something many fans don't seem to understand also is that these are 17 and 18 year old KIDS. They probably haven't had to make a major decision about anything in their entire lives. Choosing where to live away from home for the first time is probably one hell of a challenge to each of them.

And I totally agree, if a recruit doesn't want to be N, good luck to him wherever he goes. I just ain't gonna like him near as much, though!!!

On the other hand it isn't like they are joining the military and going in harm's way. It isn't a life and death decision. I agree that an athlete should want to come to Nebraska for the education and opportunities to be a part of a great team. If they aren't sure stay on the porch and let the big dogs run.
