A Warming Seat For Bo Pelini?

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
At face value to an outsider, it seems somewhat ridiculous. A head coach who has won or shared three division titles in four season, narrowly lost two conference championship games, and won nine or more games in each of his four seasons being on the hot seat? Well, maybe not a "hot seat"...but it's definitely warming up. SBNation's Bill Connelly asks it point blank when he asks if merely being "

good isn't good enough

" at Nebraska. Tom Osborne's final five seasons set the bar high at Nebraska, and while nobody honestly expects anybody to ever go 60-3 over a five year period again, Husker fans are hungry for just a taste of that type of glory.

As long as Bo wins 9 games and Tom Osborne is the AD he's safe. And with the numbers he's put up he should be.

He just needs to quit having the one meltdown game each year against inferior opponents.

I'm pretty sure we all remember the ridiculousness that ensued after a firing for the exact same reason. Personally, I'd rather go the next 30 years winning 9 games every year, than to have another $#!tstorm like the Calliban.

Didn't the Solich/crapahan situation teach us anything?

Edit: dang it, Brogan beat me to it, lol

Not hard to come up with this kind of reasoning. Just spend 20 minutes on huskerboard or max. The negative opinions of so few tend to unintentionally generalize the thoughts of an entire fanbase. You know who you are.

as you mentioned, the firing wasn't the problem - it was the hiring that followed. not in any way supporting Pelini's firing - but I hate how people all assume that the next coach would just be another Callahan and we'd be guaranteeing ourselves 5 wins seasons. If that's the case then you'd wouldn't get rid of him if he was winning 7 or 8 games a year either.

You know what Nebraska fans need to collectively learn? Patience. This coming from me is self admittadly pretty audacious, but seriously. Championships are the culmination of talent, effort, strategy, and most importantly luck.

Luck - I personally am a karma or "what goes around comes around" believing knd of guy. So maybe when both the players and fans put in the appropriate level of effort and positive will whatever that might be, maybe then we'll see the kind of luck that helps to win the big ones.

Effort- The effort is tremendously better than it was five years ago. Pelini is the kind of motivator we need to produce a maximum effort from the players. The end of 2009 was a good example of championship level effort. Proving to me he is capable of making the guys bring it.

Strategy - Defensively the strategy has wavered recently but I believe it will be sound once again. Offensively the strategy is improving and promising.

Talent - I personally believe the talent level is a tier below championship caliber this year. It doesn't mean that the players can't over achieve and prove me wrong. I hope they do. Also this is where that luck element comes into play.

with enough effort you make your own luck....we have some real work to do here.

luck has certainly never been on Pelini's side.

effort, maybe when you talk about end of 2009 - but don't mention end of 2010 or end of 2011.

strategy has yet to be seen in the B1G. beck is young, raw, and learning. defense was rough last year - something I didn't think we had to really worry about with Bo.

talent. i'm on the fence here. we seem to be very talented in certain areas and then get completely exposed in others. all american LBer that has to watch Evans get burned. all american running back with no OL. dynamic QB with receivers that can't catch.

I'll add a word to your list, something we have been far from under Bo...not only game to game, but quarter to quarter and it's cost us championships: "consistency"

Actually the firing was very much a part of the problem. It's what made any reasonable head coach look elsewhere...
