According to Sipple...

One has to assume if Martinez is the starter that the power running game/option is making its return to Lincoln. I just can't see him being the starter and tossing it down field much.

Well considering the coaches can't actually coach at the 7-7 drills, that's probably what we in the industry call a bold statement. If we're in the last week of August and Lee is dragging his feet, then the story gets interesting.

If Martinez is the best QB that scares me. Yes, he would be suited to run a run heavy option game, but plenty of us question Wats' play calling in the offense he's been running for years and years, I don't know how successful we'll be with him calling a new offense.

At least he'd have T.O. at his disposal.

If he's leading the race chances are he's improved in the ways watson wants him too to run his system

I look at it this way. Lee is more than likely the #1 due to experience. T-Mart can easily push for the #2. He is already the best runner of the 3 and if he can throw as good or better than Green (which cant be difficult) he probably has a lock on the #2 spot. Now if he developes into a good passer I dont see any reason he couldnt steal the #1.

One thing is for certain, competition is a good thing. If we have 3 guys battling for the starting spot, I am not going to think it is because we are terrible at that position. I think it is because we are deep at that position. :koolaid2:

I would be happy if Watson could reproduce what he did against Nebraska back in 2001 when Colorado pounded the ball down our throats. At least we have proof that Wats can call a good power running game with a healthy crew on the field.

Very surprized if Zac Lee isnt our QB this year. T-Mart has a special package cooked up for him (or so the word is) to take snaps from, but he will be utilized as an athlete this year not a QB.

I see the race more between Zac Lee and his elbow moreso than Zac Lee and CG/TMart.

When it's all said and done, I think we hang our hats on the run game next year. We've got one of the best RB's in the league in Helu, and Burkhead could be in the 10-15th best range. 4 returning starters on the line. I think the amount of pressure this will take off Lee will be extremely noticeable. If he only has to throw the ball ~18 times a game the difference we see with him and a healthy arm won't be night and day, but it will be significant IMO.

He was solid last year running bootlegs (as difficult as that may be) and solid in play action. He managed the games better than Cody. Even if Martinez or Cody jumps ahead of him we'll probably see some shell shock and Zac will be plugged back in like we saw against OU.

this is exactly what i have been hearing. he really tore up the defense with his legs in the spring and he is doing even better with both his legs AND his arm over the summer.

remember that when a defense has to focus on the qb run they have to stay closer to the line and thus make it easier to throw the ball. he doesnt have to be as good a passer as lee because if they try to defend the pass he will pick them apart with his legs and if they crowd the line then he will just throw it over them for someone to go up and get.

if he is better than the other 2 options then i guarantee he will have more that just a "package" he will be the starter if he gives us the best chance to win.

me thinks some of you will be very surprised come game 1.

That's the theory, I guess. More often than not, defenses load up on the box and just DARE you to throw - and you can't.

With respect to Sipp, he's always been a glass 90% full kinda guy. That doesn't necessarily really know what he's talking about. Well, it's not really a diss on Sipp's knowledge, which I'm sure is fine, but rather his insight. I always think that his articles and videos make very shallow (and unfailingly positive) statements.

im just saying that is not the only place that ive been hearing this (players on the team mostly). word is that he has improved his throwing quite a lot since fall and is maybe not as good a passer as lee but he is getting there fast.

just what people are saying.

Yep, fair enough, and I'm just more skeptical than most. I've been wrong before but I won't really get on board the T-Mart train unless/until it actually happens. Basically he sounds like this year's 'Cody Green' to fans. Dual threat at QB. Green drew comparisons to Frazier when it looked like he could play as a true frosh. Taylor draws comparisons to Crouch. We love our potential option QBs, even though we don't run that O anymore - which I think contributes to a lot of this hype. "So maybe his passing is a concern, but..." turned out to be a big 'but.'

We shall see.
