This makes me think you misunderstood my post so I’ll be very clear. I don’t think that was a mental “mistake” at all. They’re putting themselves out of the play to avoid contact. Yea put Honas in, he seems to have the toughness needed to play football at Nebraska.
IF . . . repeat IF, a player is smart enough to do that (be MIA for a play), then they also know how to be in the right position. Accordingly, the coaches can teach & reteach, but after 2 or 3 obvious repeats of this . . . time to put someone else in. But my view is, it's likely the player doesn't fully get the game. Smarts just as important as athleticism.
