Statistically speaking, Abdullah is right there. Two things hurt Abdullah this year - his overall team's performance and his overall touchdown number. Compare it to the last running back to win, who I believe was Mark Ingram. Forget the 'Alabama has never had a Heisman winner" line and look at the stats. Ingram rushed for 1658 yards, a 6.1 avg. and 17 TD. He also caught three touchdowns.
Abdullah rushed for 1,690 yards, a 6.0 avg and 9 TD. He also caught two touchdowns.
Now, I would add it helped A LOT that Alabama was a title contender and the story line that Alabama had never won a Heisman. Abdullah would've needed to hit paydirt a few times, but from a pure rushing stand point, he matches the previous running back Heisman winner.
He also had some Heisman type plays this year, though not that really popped. The option toss against (I believe) Illinois where he split defenders and took it to the house was awesome. The 4th and 15 conversion as well as leaping touchdown against Michigan was great too.
