Andy Staples' suggestion to Nebraska

Someone going to the game should shorten this, make a sign of it, and hold it up if we win. Would be awesome. chuckleshuffle

Kinda like what Devaney did :D

GBR
Before my time. Please tell us a tale.
True story.

The next year, Nebraska finished the regular season unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll. In the past, the MacArthur Bowl had been presented to the team ranked first in that poll. But this time, another poll would be taken after the bowl games, giving No. 2 Alabama, also unbeaten, a chance for that unofficial national title.
Mr. Devaney was furious, but he got even after Nebraska routed Alabama, 38-6, in the Orange Bowl. His players carried him to the showers, and when officials arrived to present the trophy, Mr. Devaney had stripped to his shorts.

As Don Bryant, Nebraska's associate athletic director, recalled: ''The bowl officials said to Bob, 'Get dressed. We need you to accept the MacArthur Bowl.' Bob said: 'You took your time making up your mind. Are you sure now, or do you want us to play the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears first?' ''

Mr. Devaney then went to the showers and the bowl officials rounded up the university chancellor and the defensive captain and presented the trophy to them.

In that big athletic department in the sky The Bobfather, Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne are each sipping on a double Johnny Walker Blue and chuckling over this snub to the college football powers.

When my dad was in High School in Genoa, his football coach called Devaney to ask if he could possibly maybe send an assistant coach, line coach or someone, to talk at the team banquet.

Devaney said, "No."

He would come himself. If you know Nebraska and know Genoa, it's not exactly a big school where he would get a lot of prestige or recognition for going. Just a great guy.

Hehe okay, this past weekend, the Devaney story came back up because there was a friend along who isn't from Nebraska and she didn't know much or anything about Devaney so my dad talked about what an interesting guy he was by telling the story again.

For the football banquet the coach wanted to get an assistant coach to call so he just called the athletic department and talked to the person who answered:

"We're having a banquet and I was hoping that I could get an assistant coach to come and talk to my team. Is that possible?"

"No," said the person who answered the phone, "They're all on vacation. I could come if that would be okay."

"Who are you?"

"Bob Devaney."

So not only did he offer to come, he was in the office answering phones while other people were on vacation. What an interesting fellow :)
