Announcers

Every defensive player has some shots that could be considered cheap. Larry's hit against OU was a great legal hit (of course his taunting was completely unacceptable but I don't think he realized the player was hurt.) The late hit on Reesing was an absolute penalty but it's just a guy playing his butt off and not pulling the reigns soon enough, give him a 15 yard penalty and shut up. The shot at CU was definitely a penalty but it was just a regular late hit like you see in nearly every game....they did not need to make him look like a thug (which reflects on our whole team) on national TV.

In all honesty, there have been questionable hits this year for him, and some where he even got the penalty for it. If you are a Nebraska fan, he is just playing hard, if your not a Nebraska fan you say it is playing dirty. So I am not surprised by their comments on this.
I had a problem with the announcers too. The problem is they don't tell the whole story and make him out to be this hines ward player where he doesn't care about the people he's crushing. (although I think hines just plays hard too.. and im a browns fan)

After the hit and the "taunt" with OU what they failed to mention is later asante went to the OU bench by himself to personally apologize and make sure the player was ok... He held a very apologetic attitude and looked very sincere on the field, but he wasn't about ot leti t affect his game.

I think players like asante should be commended for not adhering to the new "pansy" football rules. Just because players "look" like they are going out of bounds the defense is suppose to stop playing and let them turn up the sideline for extra yards? Why is the offense allowed to be rewarded for extra effort, and the defense penalized with game changing penalties?

Personal fouls anymore are called based on how a play LOOKS rather then how the rules are stated. If the QB gets hit hard, it's a penalty, NO MATTER WHAT... shoulder to chest is called for helmet to helmet.... or the dependable roughing the passer. If someone gets hit hard out of bounds so they slide to the benches, that's a late hit.

Asante's hit was not only clean - but we need more of it if football fans everywhere want to continue to pride themselves on this being one of the most physical games out there.

Ron Franklin and Ed Cunningham have announced the three games in which Asante has committed a personal foul, so they definitely think he's dirty. Yesterday's was a joke. He let up and barely hit him. It wasn't a smart play but it sure wasn't dirty. And it's a joke that they talk about him celebrating after the huge hit on the Oklahoma receiver i think? His late hit on Reesing was bad tho...

The hit on Reesing was easily out of line and uncalled for. The hit in the OU game was completely clean and Asante stopped celebrating as soon as he realized the guy was hurt; I have no problem with anything he did in that game.

I thought the late hit call against Colorado was the right call, but I don't think it was an intentional cheap shot where he was trying to hurt someone. The ejection talk was absolutely ridiculous.

:yeah

Regardless of our personal opinions of him, his actions can be seen as dirty if you are looking in from an outside perspective. Here's why:

1) The hit on the OU receiver. If you are not a Nebraska fan, you see this as taunting because the player is injured and is still on the ground. As a Nebraska fan, you see this as Asante being jacked up about his hit and didn't realize the player was hurt.

2) The hit on Reesing. If you are not a Nebraska fan, you see this as an absolute late hit that should warrant him being thrown out of the game. If you are Nebraska fan, you look at it as this kid is just playing hard but still know he shouldn't have done that.

3) The hit against the CU WR. I watched the replay a couple of times, and to me it honestly looked like Asante could have done a bit more to avoid the hit. He was a good 5 yards away when the guy was out of bounds, and he lowered his head and his shoulder before impact. Maybe he was protecting himself, maybe not.

He keeps putting himself in touchy situations. Call it dirty, call it playing tough. Either way, 3 times is three too many. It's also three more times than most players on the team have done anything like he has.

What I saw was that he was running towards to WR and just didn't stop. I don't know if he slowed down at all, but it was definitely a penalty. He didn't do anything to show that he was going to hit the guy other than running through him.

Oh yeah he wasn't looking back towards the ball, he was focused on the receiver and hit him in a way that made things look worse than they actually were.
I think you're wrong about him not looking back at the ball. The way I saw it, he was playing the ball, and looking to make the pick. They both ran out of room on the narrow sideline. I was listening to the radio while watching the game, and one of the broadcasters mentioned the same thing, that he looked like he was making a play for the ball.

It wasn't even a bad hit. Asante could've lit up that receiver like a christmas tree if he really wanted too but it was more of a light love tap.

I love his intensity. Take this into consideration, yeah his hit on Reesing was late, he got the penalty blah blah blah, but look, if he is running to him hlaf speed, what happens if he doesn't slide and just spins around him??

I'm sure Bo and Carl will take that penalty (although i'm sure they would like to avoid it) cause the kid is playing lights out these last few games. His intensity out there is noticed by everybody.

They give these kids pads for a reason. I'm gunna come out and say it, I could care less that he got penalties, he is sending a message that came to play and you better believe when he is handing out his shots, the other team notices.

I think if Franklin is doing the game this weekend I'm gunna mute the t.v. and listen to the radio. Way to biased. He hates Nebraska and we hate him back! :box

i think it is Musberger and Herbstreit, i think they said that during the ND/Standford game.

Asante is one of my favorite players and i think he gets penalties because he is reckless, not dirty or thuggish. however, that is the risk when you play full speed with full intensity.

They wear pads and helmets for a reason. How many DB's get lit up by blindside blocks by receivers? The defenseless reciever penalty pisses me off, they have pads and a helmet, as a DB you often don't know if he caught the ball or not, it's the wussification of football.

There is a difference between taking legitimate hits and taking a hit when you are vulnerable after a play.

There is nothing wrong with Asante just annihilating somebody on the football field (as long as its not helmet to helmet). However, when an opposing player is out of bounds or sliding to the ground, they are telling their body to relax and not worry about a hit. It's not OK for somebody to hit that player roughly in those situations.

Yes they wear pads and yes, sometimes refs take the protection of players deal a little too far, but think about this. When you know you are going to be hit, you put yourself in a position to minimize the blow and the pain of that hit. However, when you think the play is over or you are running out of bounds, you relax your body because you aren't expecting a blow. Most serious injuries happen when somebody isn't expecting that hit.

Do we have a video clip of the hit? I remember watching it at full speed and thinking he was looking back for the ball and ended up colliding with the guy. But when they replayed it, my impression was he was not looking back for the ball. So I'd like to see the play again.

"Wussification" is an apt description of what is happening to the game. My view is that it is fine to throw a flag or even eject someone for hitting out of bounds, depending on the level of infraction. However, it is also my view that if you are in bounds you should be legal to get nailed. If you are a quarterback and decide to run with the football, then you should be just another running back. If you're that freaking precious of a commodity to your team, then don't try to run for positive yardage. It's those runs for positive yardage that really chap my arse. These QB's get to run and get all the yards of a regular back with none of the bumps associated with it, because they get to do that queer little slide. Whether the qb is flushed or it is a designed play for positive yards, I think the guy should be fair game.

The logic is that people won't come to games to watch the 2nd or 3rd string QB play. They want to see points scored, and that's why we have to protect the QB. That's BS in my book. Where does it end? Should we be giving the players a treat and popsicles on the field after the game too?

Every player on the field with the ball has the option to do that "queer little slide". It's not just limited to the QB.

Your logic? False IMO. It's about protecting the players.

It is about protecting their full stadiums by seeing that their precious starting QB doesn't get hurt. My logic is fine.
