OWHBut as Armstrong recently reflected on the 2014 season, what stood out was not the rally, but the inhibiting moments when he unabashedly expressed his critical thoughts and failed to lead the unit out of its funk fast enough. Those moments when he took his spot on the bench, between the running backs and the offensive line, and started firing off commands, only to find himself in a shouting match.
“You come to the sideline, and you go to bark at them,” Armstrong said. “You’ve got someone else barking at you, and you want to bark back. And he’s not just going to sit up there and take it. He’s going to say something back.”
It was a painful manner in which to learn a valuable lesson about leadership.
But what transpired between the failed plays and drives during that 27-22 loss to the Spartans (and during other points in 2014) has helped to reshape Armstrong’s perspective.
