2. ASU needs Keller, but Keller could've used ASU

By Richard Cirminiello

You think Sam Keller wishes he was still in Tempe, playing for Arizona State? Yeah, me too. That's all I could think about as the Sun Devils got scorched by a Pac-10 opponent for the second straight week. A little more than a month ago, Dirk Koetter tabbed Keller as his starter, changed his mind a few days later, handing the job to Rudy Carpenter.

Oops. Not long after, football's version of a soap opera broke out.

Accusations flew, Keller seethed and the Sun Devils lost a terrific quarterback to Nebraska. Bad move by Koetter. Worse move by Keller.

Sure, he'll do fine in Lincoln next year, but by next year, he should've been cashing fat NFL paychecks. Had he swallowed his pride and stayed at Arizona State, right now Keller would be the hands-down most popular player on the Sun Devil roster--the backup quarterback on a team that's crashing and burning. Carpenter has been a complete mess the last three weeks, completing 46% of his passes, throwing seven picks and losing his confidence along the way. Against an average Oregon pass defense Saturday, he completed just 6-of-19 for 33 yards and an interception, the low point of his career. The bottom has fallen out, and a trip to USC is next on the schedule. It wouldn't have taken very long for chants of Kell-er, Kell-er, Kell-er to ring throughout Sun Devil Stadium Saturday afternoon. Ahhh, Keller himself couldn't have drafted a better script. Oh, and as shattered as Carpenter is these days, there's no doubt Koetter would have obliged, giving his senior the ball to the delight of the home crowd. The quarterback now craves redemption and a chance to prove ASU wrong after feeling he got shafted by his teammates and his coach. So determined is Keller to redeem himself, he left a campus he loved and is taking a mandatory year off from football. He didn't have to. Had Keller been patient and stuck it out, he'd probably be enjoying the last laugh without ever leaving Tempe.

I think Keller will have a better year next year with all the talent on offense that we have. Their talent is ok, but ours is better. He is going to have a big year next season. GBR!

Koetter is slowly but surely killing that program by running off all of it's real talent. Keller is much better off leaving when he did and he will still have the last laugh and plenty of time to cash even bigger NFL checks after leading Nebraska next year.

To bad so sad to freaking late , he is a Husker. Maybe if his coach at asu had a brain, he would have shafted a proven senior. Keller had zero guarantee that he would ever see the ball there again. He made the right choice.

I for one am looking forward to next season and the great possibilities that lie ahead for us and Keller.

It's exciting to look ahead to next season because we will develop that much more as a team..........however I'll miss having Zac at the rains next season.

Zac has a set the size of grapefruits. We owe Zac more than I can express for what he has done and has yet to do.

Taking nothing away from him, but a lot of our younger players will be more experienced that and our D should be tough.

Should be fun.

Yeah Zac is a stud of a football player and I agree with you 100% it should be interesting to see what happens with a little more experience for all of our players :thumbs

NUTS. ASU screwed Keller. How could they expect him to stay? He could have stayed on the team and sat on the bench the whole season too. IMHO Keller ought to not even look back, no regrets. He ought to be focused on the present and his goals for next year. If he's got the right stuff everyone will know it. If he's mediocre next year he never would have made it in the NFL anyway. This guy wants Keller to sit around and wait for twists of fate. Phooey, let ASU do their own soap opera thing. Keller will create his own opportunities.

Help Wanted:

Head football Coach

Please contact the Athletic Director ASU

All candidates must have previous head coaching experience. Ability to make a decision and follow through with it. Candidates should also be a good judge of talent, charector and intelligence. Ability to ignore or put parents of players in their place and explain to them that they are not the coach and do not make coaching decisions. Must have a backbone stronger than that of a jelly fish and skin thicker than one as well.

To bad we do not play them next year. Not to take anything away from keller, but he still has to earn the job. It should be an interesting spring.

As for that I will wait untill next year and ENJOY the rest of the Zach Taylor show.

I agree. When ZT is on it is really fun to watch. He may not have the strongest arm in the world but that simply means we will have an efficient offense that hopefully doesn't need to rely on the "big" play or bomb downfield to win. Husker football is fun to watch again. Much of it is to do with the style of offense but the guy pulling the trigger makes it happen.

Zac may not break records, but he has set the bar of standards extremely high for future QB's IMO
