Blackshirts were a way to tell the offense from the defense. Devaney had one of his coaches go to the store to get some yellow shirts for the defense, and all they had was black. Or the story goes something like that.
Blackshirts is a tradition and starters (only) should get them. You compete against your teammates for that right and the best (starters) are awarded them. I like the tradition and if these guys out there are the best, nothing you can do about it.
It's not a sticker for the helmet, it's a Blackshirt. Hope they take pride in it and stick someone when they are on the field. And let's see some bones this season!
