Band is a no show

So, a bunch of college kids--who haven't been home to see their families since late July--are a bunch of morons for not skipping Christmas just so they can make it back to Lincoln early? They have sacrificed an incredible amount of time with their families just to be in the band, making your statement all the more ignorant, dimwitted, and just about any other synonym for the word stupid.

It has nothing to do with being back in Lincoln "early". It's about making sure that they were where they needed to be in order to fulfill their commitment to NU. Guess what-most of the football players "skipped" Christmas due to the bowl game.

<_< If your going to pay to travel all the way to San Diego, and for a game ticket, what is the problem with getting the full bowl experience? Nobody told you that you had to read all 50 posts, or even the first one.

That's a good point.

From this point on my argument becomes completely based on opinion, but I think the two situations between the band/team are different. The players were only back in Lincoln to leave on time because they were scheduled to practice Thursday morning. If they wouldn't have had those practices on Christmas Eve and Christmas, I'm not so sure everyone would have been back on time for their departure.

 
Hi all. I've browsed the boards a couple times but haven't started up an account, but thought this would be a good time to register.

I'm a member of the marching band and wanted to clear a few things up.

We originally were scheduled to leave 8 am on saturday, but that got pushed back 12 hours to 8 pm in hopes of weather conditions improving. Obviously, that was not the case. The band did not find out until about 5 pm on Saturday when our director emailed everyone informing of the cancellation. Obviously, we're incredibly disappointed. A lot of us look forward to the bowl game all year and we see it as the culmination of a season's worth of hard work (and waking up for 7 am practice everyday!). It's a huge bummer that it had to be this way. Don't blame the university. Ultimately, it was the Directors' decision and it was a difficult one. The bus company needed an answer right away, and they just couldn't wait any longer. It was a safety concern, and that is the most important reason.

Even if we could fly out there, it really would do no one any good. Usually for bowl trips, we have to learn a modified version of the halftime show as well as pregame - things that couldn't be done in a day or two. Last year for the Gator Bowl, we spent quite a bit of time down there trying to perfect everything from performances to parade formations, and even practicing our tunes.

Yes, the band's season got cut short, but we'll still be rooting for our Huskers. Go Big Red!!

Wanted: Huskers musiciansNebraska graduates sought for ad hoc band

The University of Nebraska marching band canceled its trip to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl because of blizzards and poor road conditions in Nebraska. To make up for their absence, the school’s local alumni chapter is seeking Nebraska graduates with musical talent. The hope is to at least put together a motley crew that can play the Cornhuskers’ fight songs.

“We’re trying to get the word spread,” said John O’Reilly, vice president of the Nebraska’s San Diego alumni chapter. “If we’re lucky, we can cobble something together at the last second and get them down to San Diego.”

Nebraska faces Arizona in Wednesday’s football game at Qualcomm Stadium. O’Reilly said he even sent a message to the University of Arizona alumni association asking if the school’s band would consider learning the Nebraska fight songs to play them in the Nebraska band’s absence before the game and at halftime. He hasn’t heard back yet.

“We have a tradition in Nebraska where our band learns the opposing team’s fight songs and plays them for their guests,” O’Reilly said. “We have a high level of sportsmanship at Nebraska. I thought maybe the U of A marching band could show us that and help us out by playing a couple of our songs for us.”

Now that is funny. I guess all the band parents won't be able to tell everyone how half the fans are there just to watch the band this time either.

if they could pull off a lil pep band, that could be heard in the stadium and on tv, that would only add to the awesomeness of our coast to coast fanbase. i hope they do. fat old west coast hippie band geeks unite!!!

 
The NU Athletic Dept can afford to fly the band to Cal and that's what they should have done. The band is part of the program and Husker fans who travel all the way to San Diego deserve it.

At the battle of the marching bands Monday in San Diego , the University of Arizona band creamed the University of Nebraska band.

Of course, the Pride of All Nebraska was back in Nebraska, creamed by winter weather.

“Something major was missing without the Cornhusker fight song,” said Gary Rectenwald, chairman of the Holiday Bowl’s college band committee.

And so with these words from Chancellor Harvey Perlman — We have to do something about this — Rectenwald did.

He knew another Nebraska band was in town. The Marching Knights of Lincoln Southeast.

How about those high school kids?

Perlman gave the go-ahead.
