Bando: Talk of "Simple" Defense Was Greatly Exaggerated

Yeah, I think so. Everyone always talks about simplifying every year, going basic, etc, but it's (usually) never going to be backyard football or anything like that. Even if the playbook isn't a thousand pages or if commentators aren't going to gush over how the DC has all these exotic blitz packages or whatever, players have to be super, super proficient in the assignments they are asked to do.

It's not trivial by any means to do even an ostensibly basic thing well. Or to be an expert in a so-called "simple" scheme.

 
So seriously......was anything we were led to believe about this staff before the season started truthful? Other than the "nice guy" stuff......

The Oregon state guys were spot on about Bray. IMO, who should have been named DC and hired another guy maybe to help coach linebackers.

I seem to remember Banker come out pre-season some time and tell the media that the defense they will be running is not as simple as what was being said.

 
Posted an article on other posts that was interviews with Narduzzi about the quarters coverage. After reading, it did not seem simple at all. Bordering on the difficult. Guys passing off receivers, everyone making the same pre-snap reads etc..... After reading it, it is not a simple scheme at all.

I was going to mention this. I thought a lot of the simplicity notion came from Gerry's comments at B1G media days. Posters on here ran with it and speculated that there should be improvement since the players could do less thinking and fly to the ball. I don't recall the coaches characterizing it as simple.

Since we are the center of Husker universe, the media picked it up and wrote stories about the new simple defense. Now it's a fact that we have a simpler defense. The only problem is the coaches didn't get the memo.
 
Brad Kaaya said our defense was like a high school defense. He said it was very basic and all they had to do was locate gerry and it would tip our coverage.

  • Gerry stated that the defense was simplified
  • Banker addressed that by stating that the D was not going to be all that simple.
  • Now I'll wait for you to show any proof that any member of the staff said that the defense was going to be more simple.
