Batting Helmets

Its pine tar, and most players prefer not to clean it off b/c of superstitions etc. Similar to some players you see with very dirty hats that arent washed the entire season.

Is the pine tar put on the helmets on purpose?

Most players like to use a bit of pine tar to get a better grip on the bat. It usually finds it's way up there either by putting the helmet on, or most players actually put it there on purpose.

 
I believe they must use it when they practice with wooden bats (improves grip), and when they adjust their helmets it rubs off. Someone else correct me if Im wrong but Im not sure of any other reason they would be using it.

I'm watching the game today on a delayed basis. In the bottom of the fifth there was a definite bad call. The ball hit the bat before hitting the ASU batter in the face. I'll not check back until I've seen the final result ... don't want to miss the exciting finish. ;)
