Baylor hires Briles from Houston

Damn, Baylor is going to hit the recruiting trail with a HC before Nebraska

It's probably a good move on his part. Houston has two schools (the bright ones go to Rice). It's also muggy and humid and hot there, where as Waco is just hot. And to compete in the Big 12 has more lure and attraction and storied program history than Conf-USA.

Sounds more exciting taking your team up to Lincoln, Norman, Austin, College Station to play, than Tulane, East Caroliina, Tulsa (no offense my Tulsa brothas!), or Ala-birmingham.

I think Baylor could have a decent program, but not in the Big 12. If they were in the WAC or Mountain West, they could challenge for conference titles. I don't think it matters who's coaching them, they will be at or near the bottom of the Big 12 every year.

I dont think Kansas or Missouri got that memo.

Even though I want to agree and think it's all mirage. But it's not. Baylor can be at the top in 4-6 years like any of those programs, just like we hope to be.

Kind of sad how it has turned out. But we will be back soon!!!

The Houston Chronicle reports that Baylor made Art Briles a very rich man: a seven-year contract that will pay him $1.8 million per year.

Hope it works out for Briles and the Bears.

sure it matters, a good coach can recruit AND COACH. look what cally did at NU, dragged this program right into the dirt and we think we can recover. why shouldn't Baylor (although never great) field hopes of better times ahead?

I find myself wondering why Baylor can't become great? Do they have higher academic requirements or something? I mean they do reside in one of the best recruiting beds in the country. If South Florida can do it when they didn't even have a program 12 years ago, why can't Baylor?

They are an exceedingly tiny school, and they have tougher academic requirements than most. Combine those two and you have your explanation why they have never really succeeded even though they sit inside a hotbed of recruiting like Texas.

They had a great coach long ago named Grant Teaf. He could coach, motivate, game plan, and recruit back in the SWC days. They havent turned it around since. It wouldnt take as much as it has. They have an amazing baseball program & womens basketball program too.

Until a coach comes in and gets these guys to believe in themselves and win, step by step of the way, they wont get the recruits as long as they keep stinking. They get leftovers, which is not a bad thing, but no one is bringing the absolute best out of them. That's what a great coach can do. Get players to believe and overachieve by working them hard and instilling confidence while keeping them motivated and hungry. It takes only one class to get it rolling.

This is why I was asking. Isn't Baylor pretty strong in some other sports down there? Why can't they pull a Kansas and have a strong football program as well? In terms of their entire sports teams, aren't they very compeitive in the Big 12?
