BCS playoff/nat'l champ revision

I hope this does not go past 4. At 16 I would go broke taking a month off work and traveling to various locations in order to see NU win a national championship.
If they were to do it the absolute right way, it would be an 8-team playoff with 6 conference champions and 2 at-large teams. I hope it gets there someday but preferrably no further than that.

We have a season let's not drag out the postseason. These kids do have classes and finals around these times.

But Muck, it's been a version of the very thing you describe for decades. Let's not pretend that this radically changes things. It simply calls it what it is - a tremendous money-maker looking to make more money.

The same as it ever was.
To an extent yes, but this really signals a sea change. It is the first time that all of the decisions being made completely ignore what is in the best interest of the fans, students & the Universities themselves.

Yes I am saddened to watch people dance on the corpse of the very things that made Div 1A college football special.

Hopefully a large enough group of young men will have the intestinal fortitude to stand up and file a class action suit against the NFL for it's unethical hiring practices. Start up an actual farm system for the pros instead of distorting the mission of Universities to accommodate individuals who have no interest or place within institutions of higher learning.

Why is it I rarely hear this of college hoops?

Horrible question, let me restate - Since they play more games and travel more often, is there as much concern for the interruption of the academic process of college basketball players as college football players?

Serious question do you think a farm system could work for professional football? I think that it could if the NFL is supports it in the right way, getting past the stigma of farm teams playing mediocre football would be a pretty big hurdle though. Then there is the wear and tear on a players body to consider.

I didn't know schools have finals in March and early April.

I don't think that argument holds much water if you really look at it. As UNL's schedule is setup for next year they finish exams December 14th and start the next semester on January 7, that's three free weeks that would only be filled with bowl practice and time away from family anyway. Athletes get so many exceptions for taking exams at different times as is it shouldn't be a big problem to take finals earlier. Or, a 16 team playoff would take 4 weeks to complete and if they were really concerned about finals they could move the playoffs back so that the final week lands on the first week of the new semester. The first week is always a joke anyways most class don't really start till the second week since students are swapping in and out of class to get their schedule right. And if they are REALLY concerned I don't think too many students would complain if they just altered everyone's schedule and started the semester a week earlier and gave a 4 week break instead of 3.

Another tremendous benefit to putting in a four-team playoff: We can get rid of this ridiculous "FBS/FCS nomenclature and get back to D1A, D1AA, etc. The way God intended.

I honestly don't know but we've gotten to the point where something has to change before the integrity of the universities is completely destroyed.

I've already heard rumblings that the next big media push will be to shift focus from 'playoffs will magically make everything better!' to how unfair it is that college football players aren't paid six figure salaries.

I don't think too many students would complain if they just altered everyone's schedule and started the semester a week earlier and gave a 4 week break instead of 3.
Why have classes at all as it is clear the Universities are merely there to service the needs of football.

Don't bring God into this thread, that's the last thing we need in here!

Their you go now we're on the right track. But seriously it's a pretty simple solution and I don't think it's logistically that difficult to do. Of course people will make wise cracks like you did but when you sit down and think about it realistically what are the negatives?

If you can ask with a straight face "what are the negatives of the university configuring it's entire schedule around one of the athletic teams" then I'm afraid there is not an answer I can give you that you will grok. I'll just have to admit that we live in two completely different worlds regarding the mission of universities and the role of college athletics.

They are talking you could have a 4 team playoff with the 4 top rated teams or they could go with conference champions only. (top 4 conference champions). Personally I like the conference champions option. It would eliminate some of the lobbying for votes & be a little more objective.

What say you?
Would keep Ala. and LSU from playing each other in the MNC. SEC will never go for it.
So you are saying that when it comes to conferences the SEC is the equivalent of Texas.

I can ask with a straight face because I was hoping someone would enlighten me and maybe sway my opinion. I'm not the most brilliant person in the world so there has to be a counter to the idea other than the further negative connotations it would bring to the university system.

I think the best system would be a 16-team playoff, because you give the same type of opportunity to mid-majors that you do in basketball, that being allowing ALL conference champions in, and then having 5 at-large spots. We'll see if it ever gets there, though if the playoffs are the money-maker I think they have the chance to be, the dollar signs will likely make more playoff teams happen at some point. Whether it ever gets as big as 16, we'll have to see. Even at 16, it's less of a percentage than it is in most NCAA playoffs for other sports. Hockey only has 59 (I think that's the number, it's right around there) DI schools, but include 16 in their playoff. Basketball and baseball are around 300 schools (baseball just under and basketball a bit over) for DI, and baseball has 64 teams and basketball is at 68 teams now in their playoffs, both for approximately a 20 percent ratio of schools in playoff to total schools in the division.

Regardless, I'm just happy to see some type of playoff. Have wanted this for years. I appreciate the history, but the system has been broken for decades, and this is at least a start towards fixing that. (I never saw the BCS as a true 'fix'... way too many flaws in its setup)
