PART 2:
Kansas undoubtedly improved its offense in the last 5 games winning 4 of the last 5 against Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa St and Houston in the Fort Worth bowl, and the lone loss coming to 2005 National champs Texas in Austin 66-14. Kansas ran 391 passing plays, and 413 running plays showing it was balanced both running and passing the ball. Kansas runs different formations. They run a spread most of the time, a Power-I, a Split back and a Pro set.
Quarterback: Adam Barman: 3V
Kansas will lose Juco QB starter Jason Swanson who completed 55.3% of his pass (105 for 190) and threw for 1305 yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. KU will also lose the services of 3 year off and on starter Brian Luke who completed 50.9 of his passes this year (87 for 170) for 885 yards, 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. KU will return Junior Adam Barman who has extensive playing time but saw a limited role this season as a QB throwing for 118 yards on 16 of 30 attempts (53.3%) 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception. All 3 QB's this season have each thrown more interceptions then touchdowns. Adam Barman who was the starter on offense in 2003 completed 53.8% of his passes (141 of 262), 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He is 214 for 377 (56.8%) for 2,110 yards, 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions during his career at KU. Suffice to say, KU will have an experienced QB next season.
Running Back: John Cornish 2V
KU will lose 3 year starter Clark Green who rushed for 664 yards this season on 153 carries and 2 touchdowns. His role diminished somewhat towards the end of the season behind Junior John Cornish who rushed for 780 yards in 134 carries for 9 touchdowns. Cornish is similar to Cory Ross this year and presents a problem rushing and catching the ball as a back. He had 16 catches for 150 yards this season and 2 receiving touchdowns. Again, KU will have some experience at this position. Backing Cornish up will likely be delegated to Junior to be Brandon McAnderson who rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries and 1 touchdown. Backing them up will be the duties of Sophomores Gary Green and Tang Bacheyie
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends:
Kansas will lose 2 starters in the WR corp in starters Charles Gordon and Mark Simmons (98 catches for 944 yards combined) in addition to backup Greg Heaggans. Returning experience includes starting Sophomore Marcus Herford (7 catches for 64 yards) and Senior backup Brian Murph (33 for 368 yards). The other lone returning starter is Junior Marcus Henry (17 for 183) and his likely backup will be Jeff Foster (4 for 70 yards). KU will return some experience but will also lose some. If KU's WR's can continue to catch passes and open up holes for Cornish, the Jayhawks might have a successful season.
Offensive Line:
Kansas willl return it's entire offensive line, from starting Offensive tackles Jr. Ceaser Rodriquez (1V), Fr. Anthony Collins (RS) and offensive guards Senior Bob Whitaker (2V), and Fr. Ryan Cantrell (RS) in addition to center Jr. David Ocha (2V). KU however does lose a Senior in backup Matt Thompson. KU still has a young offensive line and they were pushed around alot last year and teams got pressure on the QB and had KU done a better job of protecting it's QB's, they would have won more games. That's something Mangino will surely address during the offseason and look for ways to improve his unit.
Special Teams: KU will return kickoff specialist Scott Webb, Punter Kyle Tucker but must find replacements for kickoff returns player Greg Heaggans and punt returns player Charles Gordon.
KU 2006 should be a better version offensively then they were in 2005 and with the experience they return on offense, they could become the first Kansas team to challange for the Big12 north this season.
