I think most of it hast to do with husker nation. Obviously there are coaching issues, but I think they are smaller than callahan. I think the real issue is cosgrove. If we had a good D callahan might actually be able to do ok but he doesn't have the balls to fire cos. Thats his real fault. Not that I think he is a great coach. But at some point its up to husker nation to stand behind whoever the coach is, for an extended period of time. I think given a few more years and a new DC even callahan could turn this thing around.

I tend to think he could have turned it around this year. Pretty much everybody thought this was his break out year before the season started. The current malaise began on the defense and spread to the offense.

Simply put, he steamrollered Nevada as he should have, beat a Wake Forest Team that's better than people gave them credit for being (if not, why do so many people bring up Grobe for the next NU coach), and for a good part of the first half against USC NU looked like they might be the better team. Things just slid after the half against USC and didn't recover until KState.

Then again, they gave Texas fits for three quarters too.

If Cosgrove and the Defensive staff were overhauled that might have saved BC. Probably too late now though. I just think if they had played like the did against KSU all year we'd probably be 10-2 or 9-3 right now. Might even have wound up unbeaten. Oh what could have been....

I wondered about that also. Monte is getting to the end of his coaching days. He might just want to take the the job he wanted back in the 70's. I don't know if his son would want to give up his gig. Your supposed to be at the top of your profession when you reach the NFL, aren't you? It sounds good if it went down that way. Bo may be the real deal, but he only stays 3 or 4 years. Gill would stay till he retires. It's hard to understand the Husker tradition unless you have lived it or played it. I wish TO the best of luck on a tough decision.

Depends on where his heart is. Maybe Monte would want to end his career in the place it began. Maybe lane would jump at the chance to work with his dad. When I picture the two coming here,it just seems like something the school, and the fanbase would groove on. I mean the whole 'family' feel it would have.

I think people would admire the nod it would give to the Devany-Osborne legacy. Just sounds like something we would do.

I don't think Bo would jump back to the NFL from here. Maybe if he were coach at a less prominent school, but the guy strikes me as having found his niche in the college game. Some remarks he's made in recent interviews seem to indicate that he feels that way about it too. He seems comfortable at the college level. I can see him taking a prominent job like NU or A&M and staying there as long as he could.

Something that mosts haven't considered, but what if Osborne ditches Callahan and does even worse? Things could conceivably get worse(believe it or not). I don't think this will happen, but food for thought. Regardless, TO is faced with a huge decision and should probably rely on the force.

well, we definitely need help on the defensive side of the ball, as cally takes NO responsibility for that. although he has been excellent in all areas.

Apparently Osborne started having second thoughts about Solich becoming the new HC but when Frank's wife found out Osborne might back out of the deal, she chewed his as up one side and down the other and Osborne, true to his nature, went thru with the plan.

This is not a discussion on whether or not a change needs to be made......that's a done deal, and even if it's not, I'm getting tired of same ol' topic...

Instead.....Does anyone agree that the next 2-3 weeks, TO is going to make a decision that will ultimately be the most important one in the progarams history and future....

I have a real "uneasiness" about this whole situation... I just feel that our biggest fear 4 years ago is ultimately coming true...... "revolving door"....." Alabama".....

TO needs to make sure that this next coach, or same coach is someone who is going to not only turn this program around, understand the fan-base, but feels as if this coach will stick around..... Of course, I am not trying to tell TO his job, so for some of you guys looking for a reason to "attack" or "argue"....please don't waste yours or my time...

My question I guess would be.... is anyone else very uneasy about the entire situation? TO retires, we all freak out....Frank takes the job (does fine....ok....), fired, Husker Nation a little divided on this..... BC comes in and Husker Nation still divided a bit..... 4 years later..... Most escorting BC to the door......

Now, if we don't get lucky like OU with Stoops (turns around program and stays)..... I am afraid that in 4-5 years, this may happen again....which is why I am uneasy , but realize the "enormity" of the decision about to be made...

I trust TO, just uneasy feeling about what's happening...... (not firing BC, just teh progression the programs taken)

The main thing here is "staying competitive." I believe if NU stays competetive that whoever the next coach is will be here a long time. My definition of competitive is averaging no less than 8 wins a year and staying close in losses. Not getting blown out like we did earlier this year. Also consistently being ranked in the Top 15 (preferably the TOP 10. Baby steps here). If these things happen, NU's new coach will be here a long time and have a few National Title's.

NU's situation is unique. We are probably the only school who hasn't had a revolving door so to speak w/HC's (w/the exception of PSU and FSU).

Billy C's tenure will be almost 4 years in January. That's not bad. Solich was 6 year's, TO 25 year's and Devaney 11 year's. I do think whoever the hire is should have some sort of Nebraska ties. Whether that's as a former player, a coach, a person born and raised in Nebraska but has never had the opportunity to coach at NU but bleeds Nebraska Red.

IMO there are really only 2 viable candidates: Turner Gill and Bo Pelini. Both of whom I believe would be excellent HC's at NU and both of whom I believe would stay for a long time. I know Bo used to coach in the pro's however, I think he love's college football and you always are in charge of your team. You don't have huge ego's to appease w/big $. When you tell a college kid to jump, they say how high. When you tell a pro to jump, they tell you where to stick it. That's why Saban came back, he was tired of trying to manage hig paid crybaby's.

If the desired effect is to get a "name" and build the program, go with Pelini. If the desired effect is to have a quality coach who will stay long-term, go with Gill.

I too worry about Bo P being a short term fix. That's why I think the choice of OC and DC is so very important. If we could get Bo as HC and some how convince him to bring in Turner Gill as OC then our collective rear end could be covered if Bo leaves. I don't really think this will happen but I'd like to see it.

The thing we all need to remember is to be patient for once. This next coach has to be the right one because I definately don't want to go through this crap every 4 years! I agree that this is a very very important decision, but I don't think it's the biggest ever.

Keyword PATIENCE. Don't think that word is in the vocabulary of the Husker fans from the years 2004-2007. Feel sorry for the next guy and the next guy because Huskers fans have very little patience when it counts the most. Most demand perfection from the onset. Good luck with that.

I as a fan am willing to wait, watch and enjoy. Whatever happens.

Where was the patience for Solich's revamped staff? Steve Pedersen set the standard for expectation by firing a coach who went 9-3 and then pounding his chest about not surrendering the Big XII. But go ahead and blame the fans if it makes you feel better.

i think it is a little too much to ask any Husker fan to watch a team give up over 500 yards a a game and get blown out by other Big 12 teams.

the Blackshirt tradition has been totally trashed by Coz and his worthless f'ing bunch of position coaches. coaching, coaching, coaching. we have no damn coaches. we need to change that and now, not award 2nd chances to a group of coaches that have sat on their collective asses for the last 4 years and trashed this program.

i don't agree. if you hire a decent guy and see the schemes, coaching and effort on the field, people will be patient enough to give him time to build up the program. as many have said, we have some decent talent here right now, a new coach could come in and turn this thing around pretty quickly.

with cally, it will simply be more of the same old sh#t......he only knows one way and that way doesn't work.

My question then, if BC would have fired Coz earlier in the year, would we all given BC teh benefit and the "patience" to continue to build...

Look at Taylor after only 2 years in system.....Even Keller says the reason Ganz is playing so well is because he knows this system inside and out...... In another post, I mentioned I would like to see what would happen if you had a "Big-time" QB have 3-4 years in the system....what kind of numbers.....What if we had "big time" WR (other than MO)......this group is average at best and still are able to perform in the system..

Hell, people were calling for BC long ago..... I honestly do not agree that Husker Nation, yes, the same Husker Nation that I am PROUDLY a part of, has the patience to give anyone 4 years, if we don't WIN..

Hell, we won the North last year, BC revamped, and beat Michigan in year 2, won the north in year 3, and struggled this year..... Do people actually believe that if a "new" coach hasn't won the North within 2-3 years like BC did, that we will all say "that's ok"...... I disagree........hello revolving door , unless some guy works magic and comes in a wins the north within 2 years......

This why the decision IS THE BIGGEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY AND FUTURE....
