Yeah, but that doesn't change the reality that we have a damn good coach. The best coaches do completely stupid things. This will be something to learn from. Criticisms are completely fair, but Bo is a fantastic coach.

Just please don't overreact, everyone. That's the ugliest thing that can happen.

Is he good at getting his team to play consistently focused football? Does he consistently field intense, play a million-miles-an-hour teams with heart and passion? Has the mechanics of the QB's, the receivers, etc. improved a great deal? Is he good at hiring assistant coaches? Is he good at roster management? Is he good as an ambassador of the program or with the media?

I guess I am asking what is it that he is good at? I know he does have some positive attributes --- very good defensive X's and O's... but beyond that, what makes you say he is good?

I was going to agree with this... But then I realized the first line wasnt "..for it on fourth down and less than three yards on their side of the 50."

Trying to be reasonable, we lost for several reasons:

-two costly turnovers deep in NW territory

-three ridiculously bad drops past the first down marker (2 by bell, one by kinnie)

-this was the worst reffed game all year (clangs evans pass interference against the ball in the end zone gives NW a touchdown)

-Bo leaving his nuts on the field in '08 when Jimmy smith took a fake field goal to the house... As in unbelievably conservative since then and certainly left points on the field today

-terrible use of time outs, time management, halftime adjustments.

How much of that is on BO and how much is on the execution of the players? About 50/50. Bo shouldn't go, but we were due for one like this in our rebuilding year. Look at who we have next year, that will be our best chance. And if we return 17 starters on a 12-2, 11-3 team... Look out.

If that was a case of TL,DR for some of you, long story short is that the sky is not falling. Calm down, regroup, finish the season. We'll be fine.

He was fired because he was caught in an embarrassing situation that gave them no choice. You really don't want to know. Cotton is too connected with the administration and can't be fired. Just given another made up job to where the states tax dollars go to waste.

Oh but I do. I'm not asking someone to spell it out on this board, but that Bo has to answer for it. At the end of the day, all the accountability falls on his shoulders.

The receiving corps has been much better this year even with the youth. They helped us fight back today. Just look at Kenny Bell. And Taylor has been playing miles ahead of where he was last year. He truly is evolving into the kind of QB we need right before our eyes. Dr. Beck is the one deciding that we're somehow good at the option when we're not. It should simply be scrapped.

Bo has no excuses. I'm not a big fan if firing up the fire mobile at the first sign of trouble, but this pattern is becoming tiresome. In year four we have less defensive talent than year one. Our line is laughable. The offense seems to be trending in the right direction, but how or why the defense has gotten to this point under him is baffling. The way things are going we'll be looking at another tumultuous offseason.

This is how we got in this position in the first place. With people that called for Solich to be fired! Heck I can remember when Osborne was getting run out of town but luckily he wasn't. This will be a long road to get back to being dominant again. I think Pelini is a great Defensive mind but not necessarily a head coach, Yet. He will get there but it will be a while. I do feel your frustration and do not think you are a bad fan because you expect excellence. I also get miffed when the team I love plays like a bunch of girl scouts but they will get better.

Bo doesn't fully prepare his players for every single game. Only some of them. That's not good enough.

Bo doesn't fully recruit the best players he can at every position. He over recruits certain positions (DB, RB) while others are undermanned (DL, QB). Not good enough.

Bo loves to scheme and yell. Hates everything else about being head coach. Not good enough.

Bo is a good head coach, but will never be great unless he makes some serious philosophical changes.

The issue of losing to bad teams is not the point, really. I will say this. Bo is bad with the media. He is bad as an ambassador of the program. He is bad at hiring assistant coaches. He is bad at roster management in terms of redshirts. He is bad at roster management in terms of substituting. All together too many productive players end up in a coaching doghouse and are not allowed to play.
But with all that... Bo's biggest problem is a complete inability to field a team that is motivated, intense, and focused on both sides of the ball all 4 quarters.

Bo is, at best, an average coach... and this is giving him more credit --- much more credit --- than he is due. I see him as quite a bit below average. NU NEVER should have hired an inexperienced HC. Some say it is reactionary... this whole notion of Bo being an unacceptable --- but not for me. He was unacceptable upon hire as far as I was concerned and he

has never shown anything to to change that perspective. Today was just another in a long, long array of data points that show forth that NU is headed nowhere until a change is made.

And who would you hire? There isn't a soul out there who would touch NU with a ten foot pole if Bo is axed. No one of merit anyway. If you think Urban, Chris Petersen, or anyone like that would come here I would suggest you sober up.

Here I could not agree more. You are correct.

With three bad coaching choices in a row, NU is in a much less good position to get a really good coach than they were when they mistakenly hired Solich. And we are even in a less good position than when NU mistakenly hired Bill Callahan (which was an interesting hire --- he was experienced, unlike Pelini and Solich --- but he had an already demonstrated inability to lead his players),. And, when Bo was hired, the NU position was not a really attractive one, but it was probably more attractive than it was then.. though maybe not.

No. NU cannot command a demonstrably excellent coach like a Peterson or Meyer... of course not. But there are some coaches out there that have had success that likely would be interested.

The ends don't justify the means. I can honestly say I'm pretty disappointed in Bo. Hasn't lived up to his own words yet.

"Some" incredibly positive attributes, I'd say.

Some of the things you are pinning on him is ridiculous. His players will run through a wall for him, but every coach has problems motivating teams the right way for every single game. That's an unsolvable problem and it is not unusual to see this out of a team (just look at Wisconsin!) But, do we see a lot of million-mile-an-hour, intense units fielded by Bo in his time here? Absolutely. Bo turned this team around, put his fingerprint on it, and brought us back to respectability. It is no small feat, and with his inexperience as a HC, he's just scratched the surface of what he could accomplish.

Roster management? If you want to nitpick about depth chart and redshirts, you could criticize any coach in America. That does not mean they are good or bad at roster management; just an opinion based on very, very incomplete information. I will say that I agree with you if you mean he is too loyal to some of the upperclassmen fat that he could be cutting to open up scholarships.

QB mechanics? you must be kidding on this one. Taylor's issues are his own, have nothing to do with Bo or his QB coach for that matter. He is just very new to the position and a very raw QB.

I think he could be better as an ambassador to the media, and I think he has made an effort to that end. Yeah, there are things you might hear that make you think, "Geez. This guy is our coach?" But that kind of innuendo aside - something I absolutely think can be addressed and might possibly be overblown - Bo is a fine coach. His biggest problem is his blinding loyalty, IMO. Something he can learn from over time, nothing to can him over. Pick out any coach in America, any successful one, and they will have their share of personality quirks and detractors.

OK, maybe not all of them, but I don't want Turner Gill taking the reins
