Bo to be Head Coach & Defensive Coordinator

Without question, the defense was the best when BO also had the DC title. He promoted Carl to DC in order to get him exposure for a head coaching job. My money says BO retakes the DC title and hires a position coach. This is clearly the best scenario.

 
Bo will call the defense from here on, and I'm sure he did plenty this year. I have stated in other posts, that the coach that I question most is JP. He took over coaching the DLine this year, and the play dropped off considerably, with the same players as 2010.

I don't disagree with you, but remember, Crick didn't play much of the season, Merideth got FAT and we had other injuries that in some games (NW) we only had 4-5 guys the entire game. They did drop off, but don't forget about "circumstances".

 
Dont forget we were adjusting to playing in B1G, which was more smash mouth up the middle running. In 2010 we didnt really stop teams from up the middle either, but that was in the Big12 where offense were more spread.

I dont think Bo will take on dual roles,JMO.

Crick did get injured, but the play wasn't great with him. Meredith did seem to get bigger, but I thought he was our best performer on the DLine this year. The future looks good. I was impressed with Rome, Ankrah, and Steinkuhler was probably our best Line player the last few weeks.

You are right, the lack of depth late in the year didn't help any.

I agree with you. I think from both a football schematic standpoint and also a financial standpoint for the university, I think having Bo be both Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator makes a lot of sense. When Osborne was Head Coach he was also our Offensive Coordinator. I think this could work very well for our football team. From a financial standpoint if the university doesn't have to shell out the big bucks to a top tier defensive coordinator and they only have to spend a few hundred thousand on a position coach I think that makes a lot of sense. We already have a top tier defensive coordinator...Bo Pelini.

Here is my question for all of you to take a whack at: If Bo becomes both our Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, is our new position coach going to be hired on the offensive side of the ball or defensive side?

I could see this going two ways; 1) We hire somebody to help Papuchis coach on the defensive line. Or 2) We hire Turner Gill back to be our QB Coach and help teach the option principles that Beck wants to use in his offense. Plus this frees up Beck to be just a coordinator.

Ok that's my two cents....have at it Husker fans :)

 
No doubt that Bo is a great defensive mind. That said, he is the Head Coach. He needs to focus on a whole lot more than just the defense. If he takes on the DC role, his mind will be spread too many different ways. I think for this entire team to be successful, there needs to be an individual at each position giving his full attention to his own job. Bo needs a guy who brings some knowledge to the position. Of course Bo will look for someone with a similar mindset, but he has to be willing to relinquish control to somebody else in my opinion. You've seen how some veteran knowledge has paid off for Michigan. I think we need something similar. Like Urban Meyer has said, it's just too hard for the Head Coach to try to have his nose in everything all the time. You've got to be able to trust the guys you hire. That why you hire them. Let them do their jobs. Now as much as I think Bo needs to let someone else come in and shine some new light on things, do I think Bo will actually relinquish full duties to someone else? Probably not.

When you title a thread like this, and it turns out to be what you think will happen, well, that's almost like posting misinformation. It might happen. It might not. Is the OP basing this on anything more than an errant thought that popped into his/her head?

 
This is why I think we won't get someone like Mike Stoops or Mike Ekler or Kevin Steele or Ron Zook will be here. None of these guys will want to come to Nebraska when the real defensive coordinator is Bo Pelini and everyone knows that.

This is exactly right. That's why the vacancy created by Carl leaving should be filled on the offensive side of the ball. A real full time QB coach would be my choice. And no, Turner Gill isn't going to come back and do that.

 
I wouldn't be surprised if JP got elevated to Co-DC. He'd do all the game planning and be the eye in the sky. Bo would be on the sidelines making calls per JP's input. Then after 3-4 years JP would be a full DC. Sound familiar? If JP were to do that then I think they would shift Special Teams to Els

and bring in a Recruiting specialist & Dline coach. Just a guess. I do like the Zook rumors but agree he would want to be a full time leave me the hell alone DC.

This a better and more detailed summary of what I suggested in a post a few days ago. Not surprisingly, I agree with you............and myself..... :thumbs

I really like the opportunity to free up a position in a unique way.................including maybe hiring a proven bona fide recruiting coordinator who can spend more time on it..................
