Bo to be Head Coach & Defensive Coordinator

No doubt that Bo is a great defensive mind. That said, he is the Head Coach. He needs to focus on a whole lot more than just the defense. If he takes on the DC role, his mind will be spread too many different ways. I think for this entire team to be successful, there needs to be an individual at each position giving his full attention to his own job. Bo needs a guy who brings some knowledge to the position. Of course Bo will look for someone with a similar mindset, but he has to be willing to relinquish control to somebody else in my opinion. You've seen how some veteran knowledge has paid off for Michigan. I think we need something similar. Like Urban Meyer has said, it's just too hard for the Head Coach to try to have his nose in everything all the time. You've got to be able to trust the guys you hire. That why you hire them. Let them do their jobs. Now as much as I think Bo needs to let someone else come in and shine some new light on things, do I think Bo will actually relinquish full duties to someone else? Probably not.

Good point about the Michigan situation. I haven't been a fan of Bo's hires either (although Beck seems to be catching on). It would benefit Bo greatly to add veteren assistants to his staff, I'll never understand why he doesn't do so.

Then after 3-4 years JP would be a full DC. Sound familiar? If JP were to do that then I think they would shift Special Teams to Els

and bring in a Recruiting specialist & Dline coach. Just a guess. I do like the Zook rumors but agree he would want to be a full time leave me the hell alone DC.

He's got alot to prove to me. His defensive line looked below average at best, and the kickoff and punt coverages were atrocious.

As much fun as it is to speculate on these matters, I'm indifferent to how this all plays out. So long as Bo & Tom are happy with whatever arrangement is agreed upon, then I'm cool with it too.

This is exactly right. That's why the vacancy created by Carl leaving should be filled on the offensive side of the ball. A real full time QB coach would be my choice. And no, Turner Gill isn't going to come back and do that.

Bo has been THE defensive coordinator all along. Carl may have had the title and been taken away from coaching d-line-supposedly- and may have had more of a hand in planning, but Bo has had a heavy foot on all of it. To think otherwise is just naive. There will be no defensive coordinator hiring from outside the program. No way in hell will Bo trust some outside person-even if it were stoops-to come in and take total control of his baby. Enough of the nonsense, because we all know what's really gonna happen and we will not notice any difference in play.

After this year, I think thats what most people are dreading. At times the defense looks awesome and other times it looks lost. The inconsistent play is whats driving people up a wall and wanting some outside blood including myself.

There were a lot of factors that lead to what many perceived as a struggling defense this year. New coaches at every level of the D. Young and inexperienced secondary, which is very depended up on in this scheme. D-line desamated by injuries. Lack of depth at a much needed linebacker position. Adjustment to different styles of offense compared to what these guys have been facing over the past few seasons. And what I believe most of all, dealing with personel types that simply do not fit the type of defense we have to play in this conference. Ex, Will Compton had a fine year, but he is simply not built to hand a middle spot against these conventional types of offenses, and it showed by how long it took for him to get the hang at it. Lastly, I dont think the D had that bad of a year, they come along way and played pretty well down the stretch with dominating performances against Mich St. Penn St. and Iowa. I expected NW to score 20-some points on us, and the Michigan game was an anomoly beins we literally skipped 2 offensive possessions and gave em the ball back time and time again. Basically my point on no difference in play is that we wont notice any drastic changes in how we play defense, only that it will be improved. You can bet Bo will study this first year hard and come up with something over the offseason to utilize this current personel in a scheme that can do even better against the offenses we face in the Big 10.

You lost me there.

Meaning that QB coach is a specialized position which I believe focuses on the fundamentals of the Quarterback position. As much as I loved Turned Gill and his execution of the option under Tom Osborne, I just don't think that's where we are headed. Now I may be wrong. I know we ran plenty of option this year, and Turner could probably teach Martinez how to execute that pitch a bit better. I just think Tim Beck being a former passing game coordinator that this offense wants to be more geared toward a multiple look spread offense. A mix of tight run formations with the ability to spread 5 wide at any time. I could be wrong with that. I just don't think Turner's knowledge of the option would help a whole lot in that respect.
