NEhuskers311........you bring up very valid concerns..... I think many people are kind of questioning the number of people "back" in the system..... Your questions are good ones, and I am only giving my opinion on the "answers"....

1st: Ron Brown was here well before 01, and knows how to be part of a NC staff and prepare....they need

"experience" and maturity...and father figure around.

2nd: Cotton was a very good OL coach....he is an in your face, smash-mouth guy....coaches hard....

we needed to get back to the "pancake" style and Barney is it.

3rd: Sanders.....completely turned around the DB.....helped NU become on the top take-away team in the

nation.... He is definately a 'players" coach..... highly sout after , once Pud cleaned house...

* Every former player that has been inteviewed lately on the radio......Ira Cooper, Barrett Ruud, DeMario Williams, Lornell McPherson, Steve Safranek, and others have said NOTHING BUT GREAT THINGS about all of these coaches.....even Trev Alberts said this may be one of the bests staffs in the nation once it is finished.. (of course, Trev may be a little biased <_< )

* remember....a lot of guys on the 2001 staff only had 1 year here and did a great job of taking a .500 team and having them go 10-3, including bowl....the didn't even have a complete year with recruiting.....they came in after Pud made Frank clean house....

I think the staff really is going to be great....they are all fairly young, energetic, in-your face, kick your a$$, or give you a hug type of coaches...... the young men at NU will be very lucky to have this staff....and, many of these guys know what it takes to coach at NU...... and the "new" guys from LSU, know how to win at a high level.......

Pelini's coaching staff

This appears to be the coaching staff Bo Pelini is in the midst of forming.

According to a source close to the situation, the defensive coaches are likely to be:

Mike Eckler (strength coach at LSU, played at Kansas State)Marvin Sanders (former Husker, coached at NU in 2003 and also served as co-defensive coordinator at North Carolina)

Carl Pelini (D-line coach at Ohio for Frank Solich)

John Papuchis (a 29-year-old defensive intern at LSU in 2007)

And the offensive coaches:

Barney Cotton (former Husker, coached with Pelini in 2003 at NU, former Iowa State offensive coordinator)

Shawn Watson (NU's offensive coordinator in 2007)

Ted Gilmore (NU's receivers coach for last three years, recruiting coordinator)

Ron Brown (Coached NU's receivers for 17 years)

This leaves one more position to be filled. Hopefully an official announcement is soon coming.

Isn't Mike Eckler from Blair, NE? I remember him painting his face all black for Kansas St.

Barny Cotton may be the weak link. While at New Mexico St as OC, his offense ranked in the Top 25 3 out of the 6 years he was there. In 02, NU ranked 61st in Total Offense (ranked 4th in Rushing/112th in Passing/59th in Scoring Offense) but in 03 it dropped to 83rd in Total Offense (7th in Rushing/114th in Passing/74th in Scoring Offense). But at Iowa State, he made some progress with their Offense. So who knows. He may turn out to be good. It's hard to say. I think NU would be best served if he coached the OL maybe?

IMO being line-coach and OC is just too much. OC/qb-coach works well since you gotta be in heavy contact with the qb anyway. But teaching/orchestrating the line is a big job by itself, trying to to that while you run the whole offensive show is spreading yourself too thin. I think Barney will do well not having to worry about the rest of the offense

Lets see.... Cotton -- unemployed (with respect to coaching) --- Sanders - unemployed --- Ron Brown -- unemployed. Usually making up your staff of people who are not currently employed (in the field that you are hiring within) raises some red flags. Are these people not competitive enough to find employment elsewhere? I am concerned that the staff being assembled (or , at least purported to be assembling) will be a staff that will really struggle recruiting. I am also hard-pressed to see these hires (if in fact these are the hires) being Pelini's choices --- it is more like they are Osborne's choices. If they are and Pelini accepted the job under those conditions (re: Grobe) .....

Anyway, I love the enthusiasm on the board --- but I am unconvinced that the events of the past few days are indeed good for NU football. Lets give them their shot, but really I am rather, well.... unconvinced that what we are seeing (or think we are seeing --- since these hires have not been made official) is all that good. Also, the recent recruits are well... not awe inspiring. The lack of team speed (perhaps the slowest in the conference?)is a problem and it is not seemingly being addressed.

Anyone else getting squeamish out there?

Watson likes smash mouth, but he had to do what B.C. told him. Remember the 2002 blowout in Boulder? His offense smash-mouthed us to death. What you will see if probably a simplified, smash-mouth version of the W.C. offense. We will still see the passing game, but there will be less of it and more power running -- the Nebraska way. As for the spread/option, which some of you want, you may see a few wrinkles with it, but I doubt that would ever be our base offense. Nebraska is built on smash mouth, and the W.C. is an effective offense for smash mouth if you also want a sophisticated passing game.

I think you have to actually call the plays in order to do what he was told. There were only 1 or 2 halves of two different games where Watson was even allowed to call plays. All the rest of the time, Clownahan had his dirty little fingers on the play calling. IMO, we will run the spread. I don't think we're going to see a huge difference other than maybe a bit more emphasis on the running game. I can see the QB's being Ganz and Lee due to their mobility. In order for the spread to work, the QB has got to be mobile enough to be a running threat. Does anyone know whether or not Witt can scramble?

I will agree Neb was built on running but what BC did show us is we can score points in a hurry if we want to.. I dont think going back to we will run it down your throut every game is the right choice.. I feel balance is key in todays game, maybe run the ball about 70% of the time one game but then have us turn it around an throw it maybe 74% of the time the next game.. Just dont want to see us getting into trouble when we fall behind in some games an then have to throw it the whole time like we did this season... Whatever offense we get should be a good one but thats just my opinion of what I would like to see...

We did in a few instances score a lot of points in a hurry, but I think we must all remember that Clownahan never (I stress never) won a game when we were behind at halftime. In most cases where we scored in a hurry, we were going up against 1) the reserves because we were behind by quite a bit 2) we were running the offense against a prevent defense. As bad as our record was this year, I'm guessing we outscored our opponents in the 4th quarter this year. This doesn't say much because we were down quite a few times by quite a few scores going into the 4th quarter. It really doesn't matter what the blend or percentages are of run and pass as long as the playmakers are on the field. If we have a stud WR like Purify but have him on the sideline for 50% of the offensive plays, we're not going to be very successful. All forms of offenses are effective when executed properly. The emphasis next year has got to be on execution and the OL blowing the other team backward.
