Dan Beebe and Bevo are getting smaller in the rear-view mirror now.
The drive toward the Big Ten is truly under way as Nebraska begins spring practices Saturday in preparation for its inaugural season in a new conference.

This creates great excitement for Husker fans. It also creates a certain amount of confusion.

With one Big Ten school -- Purdue -- having already started spring practices this past Wednesday, it seems a welcome time to get to know the new company.

A briefing: Coming off one of their best seasons in recent history, the Spartans can feel good about their quarterback situation. Kirk Cousins returns after throwing for more than 2,800 yards and 20 touchdowns last year. Also back is running back Edwin Baker, who rushed for 1,201 yards to earn All-Big Ten status. As good as Baker was, he could get a push this spring from Le'Veon Bell. MSU will need to use the spring to answer some questions on the O-line, however. The Spartans have to replace both tackles and their center. They also have to fill in for the departures of linebackers Greg Jones (106 tackles in 2010) and Eric Gordon (92 tackles).

Parting question: How will the Spartan offense respond to new coordinator Dan Roushar? A 27-year assistant, and previously MSU's offensive line coach, Roushar has now been handed the play-calling duties after Don Treadwell left for the head coaching job at Miami-Ohio.

I could see Michigan State being a dark horse to lead the Legends.

I always have respect for Mich. state. They usually feild a solid team even though it mus be tough for them to get recruits past Ann Arbor.

MSU is a young team with a lot of talent, Kirk Cousins is the real deal. It's their defense that is lacking 49-7 Bama.

With so much uncertainty driven by the fact that this is our first year and we don’t have good recent history playing any of these teams it is almost like the whole year will be like playing non-conference games. So the outcome is hard to predict but I think that we would be favored to beat any of these teams the first game of the season. After week 1 who knows.

Within a week, another Husker spring football season begins. Bo Pelini will get it rolling when he talks to the media Tuesday.
But while we wait, we're getting to know Nebraska's new neighbors.

On Sunday we took the microscope to the teams joining the Huskers in the Legends Division.

This time we peek our head over the fence at the Leaders Division, where you'll find a man in a sweater vest and 84-year-old Joe Pa getting ready for yet another football grind.
