Brown's Intensity Striking

Brown's intensity striking

As Nebraska pushes through week two of preseason camp, the many visitors attending Husker practices seem to always be taken by tight ends coach Ron Brown's aggressive and intense on-field approach to his job.

"We don't run out of bounds at Nebraska!" he shouted toward one of his players the other day.

Brown, of course, is in his second stint with the Huskers after serving as assistant coach for 17 seasons from 1987 to 2003. He'll turn 52 in November and shows no signs of slowing down. He's as intense as ever, as passionate as ever, or so it appears.

After a few years away from coaching, what does he feel like as the Aug. 30 opener nears?

"I've done this enough to where I know that every day is a big day," Brown said after Monday's practice. "I don't skip too far ahead. I skip to the next day. But that's as far ahead as I get. I've got young tight ends, and so it's a process that's developmental.

"Not only one day, but one play at a time."

Nebraska's top two tight ends on the preseason depth chart entering camp were sophomore Mike McNeill and redshirt freshman Ryan Hill. McNeill sat out Monday with an injury, apparently nothing serious.

Also, it's good to see Major Culbert has found a happy home at safety. Secondary coach Marvin Sanders says Culbert is the most improved of any of the defensive backs.

NU will use an array of looks on defense. Culbert will be part of the puzzle somewhere.

I like brown, always have, always will.... That is the one great thing about TO being back as an AD, we have access to old coaches who provided great results that we didn't have access too with callah.. I mean he who should not be named.

I love that quote. Thats something that has been missing for quite a few years. I love the days when our backs would just as soon run you over then run around you. :clap

The more I read about this guy, the more excited I get. I knew a little about him during his first tenure, but I didn't really understand how intense of a coach he was till he returned and we started getting quotes like that coming out in the paper. Sounds like an awesome guy to play for.

Players love him too.

I was surprised when I heard that Culbert is at safety now, I could've sworn he was doing reps as a linebacker.

It's good to hear that the coaches have attitudes as well. I hope they do play Major because that guy is a just a hard-hitting SOB.

this pic fired me up a little...

At 51, he's a walking example of the husker conditioning tradition! Or just great genetics! I mean 51! And still gettin down in the trenches! Heck of an asset I think. Glad to have you back!!!

It always helps when the coach looks like he can play the position he coaches! Well, maybe if bulked up just a tad, but you get what I'm saying!
