BTN Offered to Televise the Spring Game

I'm actually with huskerscott on this, for the most part. I want the spring game to be televised for selfish reasons, because I can't go to the game and I'd like to watch it.

However, I really don't buy into the whole national exposure argument. I watched Texas' spring game the other day for about 1 play, and then remembered how boring spring games are. Nobody who doesn't already know about Nebraska football is going to watch the spring game, and I honestly think recruits could care less whether it's on television. Half of the recruits are probably going to be getting ready for prom that ni
Yes lets have our game on national tv and maybe 20,000 show up. Like Texas, UNC, Florida and I am sure others.

Most fans comedown for the game cause its an excuse to practice on their tailgating/drinking. Spring game night falls into one of those amateur nights.
Last time we televised it, we had 55K in the stands.

I suppose last minute attendees would decide to stay home instead of hoofing it to L-town to watch the game. However, I agree with those that say that televising the game would be of more value to the program than trying to get a few more ticket sales before April 16. Personally, I won't be able to drive down, so I'll be relying on you guys to let me know what kind of SUPER-SECRET activity goes on.

Yes, but it was shown tape delayed and on a network most dont get unless you have DirecTv or Dish. Putting the game on live TV on network everybody gets, would dramatically effect attendance. Especially the out of towners that take days off to come to the game.

Why do we care about attendance?

or when I see a recuit say that he chose a school because they had their spring game televised and we didn't, THEN I'll buy into the idea that televising spring game is a great opportunity for our progam.
You won't see that, because you're more likely to see stories about seeing a Nebraska license plate and deciding it was destiny. But that doesn't negate the fact that the exposure will get us in the door with some kids who otherwise, might not have been thinking of Nebraska as much.

Recruiting is really an all-out effort. You have to use every resource available in every medium, or you'll get scooped by the schools that do. No, in the end, we will still fill our recruiting classes and you won't be able to say a bad thing about any of the signees. But none of that means we are recruiting to our potential.

I guess the fact that the Spring Game is heavily attended is a bit of a publicity draw. But I think there's got to be a way to have the best of both worlds here: keep the attendance up, and broadcast it on TV still.

I know I am focusing on a recruiting perspective, but from a fan perspective, I can't see why it would hurt.

Although, I can appreciate and understand where TO is coming from when he says that you don't want to put what you're doing out there so teams can work on you over the summer
I believe he also mentioned that it might affect attendance. I know folks who don't like the Spring probably don't care if the televised game affects attendance for the Spring game. But i think a replay of the game should be available for folks to watch on the Huskers.com site, don't you think?

This I agree with if your member of huskersNside or whatever its called. A full replay should be available right after the game.

Guys, I know we've all been jonesing for college football, but it's only the spring game...

It's not like they're not televising the Ohio St game...
Exactly!!!!! Some dont want to be seperated from the daily movement of the program. Well with the power of the internet and youtube, you are not. Just because I live in state doesnt mean Im more in the daily movement of the program than some guy that lives out of state. We see the same articles and practice reports.
I didn't mean to sound like debbie downer there. I know is the first football we've seen in months (especially since the last game we all saw, sucked, for lack of a better term), and the addiction, it is strong.

I just can't get that bent over the whole thing. Especially since, if you "really" want to see it, i'm sure there's going to be a way to watch.

The reason the spring game isn't on television is because Bo doesn't want it on television. I don't know why exactly, maybe he just thinks it's ridiculous to televise a practice, and maybe he thinks that Nebraska fans are already a little too emotionally invested in our program, so he's going to do what he can to keep a sense of normalcy around the program, even if it means denying fans their Husker football fix for a few more months.
I know you're just theorizing, but if Bo wants a sense of normalcy, wouldn't he put it on TV and let the kids play in front of 40K live instead of 70K?

You didnt. Im not even going to the spring game this year. Why you all must ask since I reside in the city of Lincoln. Pretty much its been the same song and dance the last few years.

11:30am- Im pretty much drunk.

12:30pm- Ohh crap the game starts in 30min.

1:00pm- and here comes the tunnel walk. whats the first play gonna be winner gets by everybody drinks at the bar.

2:00pm- Hey who is number 32 running the ball for the red. Wheres that roster they tried to charge $1 for. Well what a minute theirs two #32s, look at the pants thats what they are using distingush red from white. They both have red pants....im confused. So what team is he really on.

2:20pm- It would be really funny if 2 parents get in a fight on the field during the halftime pledge.

2:30pm- I bet one those kids gets clothes lined because hes not paying attention to the pledge, he is just concerned about getting on field and throwing the ball around.

2:35pm- Zac Lee sister is pretty hot. Do cheerleaders still do the football team????

2:40pm- Damn my neck is sunburnt.

2:41pm I think my buzz is starting to wear off. Lets go hit up the dock.

4:00pm- I think the game is over, it was same score as when we left.

Yes, we will get scooped by other schools for recruits sometimes. It's part of the game, and other schools out there do dedicate more resources to recruiting then we do. For example, I hope to God that we aren't having boosters go up to recruits and hand them money, like Ohio State and Auburn apparently do. Sure this puts us at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting the best athletes, but at least I can feel relatively guilt-free about cheering for my team.

Now, televising the spring game obviously wouldn't be illegal or against NCAA rules. If Bo has to decide between making a tiny, insignificant, probably irrelevant impact on the minds of a couple of prospective recruits, and keeping some sense of normalcy around his last spring practice of the year (which is, by the way, a practice, not a game), then I'll respect that decision. I can see why he doesn't want to make the spring game bigger than it already is, and I don't think it's unwise to sacrifice the little national exposure we would get for a little more sense of calm around the program.

As far as the impact the game would have on recruits: No recruit in this country is going to care more or be more interested in Nebraska because they happened to come across our spring game as they were flipping channels. They either already know about Nebraska and are interested (or not), or they don't know about Nebraska, and then they'll keep flipping channels, because it's a practice, and if you're not a big fan of the program (or even if you are sometimes), it's ridiculously boring.

The players probably respond the same way to 40k people live as they would to 70k people live, and Bo doesn't have the power to hold all the fans out (otherwise he'd probably choose that).

On the other hand, perhaps he feels his players will behave differently or lose focus if they know they're going to be on live television, with Urban Meyer doing color commentary. Maybe he wants it to feel like a practice, and not like a game. I don't know, I'm just guessing. I can understand why he doesn't want it to be a bigger deal than it already is, though.

I thought the whole draw of the Spring Game was that it was like a gameday atmosphere.

I really think we should not be shying away from making the Spring Game into a big event. It should be a big event that people hear about and care about. The AD should be promoting the Spring Game. Treat it as any other scrimmage...and it's our loss. Plenty of time for other scrimmages.

I just can't get that bent over the whole thing. Especially since, if you "really" want to see it, i'm sure there's going to be a way to watch.
Doubtful, since it isn't going to be broadcast live on TV.
