The message boards that go "LOL @ husker fans" need to examine themselves before saying those kinds of things. Pretty sure every forum has these types of threads, unless of course your team is in the trash heap which may explain ..... just sayin'. So is it jealousy? Those fans should worry about their own team.

I would have to respectfully disagree as well. While I was watching the Stanford game I was thinking that Rex and Gerhart look very similar in their running styles and abilities, although Rex is not quite as good as Gerhart YET. I do think that next year that could be different even with Helu as the #1 back in the 1-2 punch. We have to remember that he looks like a good solid back as a true freshmen, and if he continues to work to improve every year there is no doubt he will be spectacular by the time he is a senior.

Rex Burkhead 5'11" 200 lbs

Toby Gerhart 6'1" 235 lbs

I'm sorry guys, but this one isn't even close. Gerhart is at least twice the runner Burkhead is. I love the kid, but let's not put these Marlon Lucky expectations on him. We all know how he had to deal with that one in a hospital....

Why are we comparing Toby with Rex? Is it because they are both white- I really hate that. Anyway I disagree with your assessment regarding Gerhart.

Yes, Gerhart is great and he runs behind one of the top offensive lines, a great quarterback and gets the ball about 30-35 times a game. Oh and I forgot about the fact he has a fullback to run behind. Plus Garhard is a bruiser back.

A few things that I love about Rex

1) He is able to find the seems

2) He runs hard

3) He can block

4) He can catch

5) He is fast. Why don't we think Rex is fast? He hasn't really had a chance to get more than say 15 carries and he is always running between the tackles. Plus our quarterback and offensive line is average at best.

And one more thing about Marion Lucky if he would have had the field vision of Rex he probably would have been one of the best backs to play for NU.

One major problem here...."WATSON using Rex the right way"

If he didn't line up Hollywood (aka Marlon Lucky) in the slot and get him the ball in space 15 times a game what makes you think he would have the vision to get a less talented version of Lucky into that role???

 
Lamichael James, Christine Michael.... both freshmen, both look better than Rex right now. (yes I know LJ is a RFr, but still... same amount of time left to develop)

Rex is going to be a great back for us, doing all those little things. But I don't see him ever being a sexy (for lack of a better term... no homo, you know what I'm sayin) hypesman pick.

This is the silliest thing I have heard in a long time. Rex has his first 100 yard game and we are already discussing Heisman? Yes he is great for a freshmen. But there is absolutely no way to tell how his future pans out. There are to many unknown variables. To be honest, a more likely scenario is Aaron Green coming here next year and soon there after winning the award.

Bottom line, too early for this....

I live now around the Dallas area.

In some of my previous posts I've said, "This is my favorite recruit of the class", "I think Rex will be one of the best RB's ever at Nebraska", "Rex might rush for 1,000 yards his freshman season" ...

Then Rex hurt his foot ... and the threads read ... "Oh my God ... his career is over ... he will never suit up again."

Four or five games later he has a good game ... taking advantage of his circumstances ...

... and now he's a Heisman "hopeful".

Wow, Husker fans amaze me ... but atleast others validate what my heart and eyes have seen ... we have a special player in Rex ... I'm excited for his future.

Well...thanks for pointing out why you like Rex. However your 5 points are what should be seen/expected/liked about ANY running back in D-1...hell...any division of football. If you can't find seams (not seems), don't run hard, can't block, can't catch and are slow...you probably are a lineman, or don't play football.

Also regarding your point on Marlon Lucky...he WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE BEST backs to play at NU?!?! Hmmm...call me crazy, but unless you mean to say THE BEST EVER WITHOUT QUESTION, I'm pretty sure these numbers qualify him as ONE OF the best.

making any prediction about him after his freshman year(esp considering the time he missed due to injury) is just silly. this goes for both sides of the argument.

Really? Oh - OK I forgot that we are 7 backs deep with great blockers, great pass catchers and guys that can find the SEEMS. Why don't you show me some stats on all those backs, excluding Helu, when Rex was down? Maybe our 3-7 string RB's should move to the offensive line ASAP.

I actually liked Lucky, my point was that even though he did have a good career his field vision was below average. How many times did Lucky scamper behind the line and eventually get tackled for a loss? What I was trying to say is that Rex has great field vision he is always moving forward, if Lucky would have had that ability he would have probably been one of the top 5.

 

Do you really think that Lucky was one of the best backs ever at NU? Really? Yes I saw the stats and I don't care.

Your joking right? I mean the Heisman in 2 years? What has he done this year other than sit on the bench with an injured ankle or whatever?What did he do against Colorado other than not much? This dude will never even sniff that Heisman Trophy ever. He's too small, he's too slow and he is not strong. All he does is plow straight ahead for a couple of yards and that's it !

I think this is the real trick right here. Are these coaches going to show they have what it takes. I believe there is plenty of coachable talent on the O-side of the ball that with the right offense and everything all together, sure Burkhead or maybe eventually Green COULD be a Heisman candidate their junior or senior year.
