If you are on dial up, here is a summary
Announcer: we would like to welcome coach Bill Callahan and get your thoughts on the ABC telecast against Iowa St to open big12 play
Callahan: We came off our bye like other people are and we are just working hard to get better and that's all that matters right now. As we prepare for Iowa St, we all know we have 2 (3-0) teams butting heads. Iowa st is a very good football team. They demonstrated that coming back the other night by coming in the 4th quarter. They showed a lot of character in that win and showed the ability to win late in that contest, so this is going to be a real challenge, a good challenge for our team.
Randy (Austin American State Newspaper): When Dan McCarney was on the call earlier, he talked quite about how successful Iowa st has been in Lincoln over the years, even recently when they had a good teams. Does that work in any mental way for your team.
Callahan: The one thing i will tell ya is we have good fans here, and the home field advantage is something special. We have sold out an NCAA record for that. We are comfortable at playing at home like any other team and we need to take advantage of that
Steve Sipple (Lincoln Journal Star): Hey coach, during that army game, did you learn anything about Iowa St that you might not have known going in?
Callahan: Well learn anything new, we always learn something new when you watch someone play. Competitively, the thing that stuck out to me is their ability to play special teams. Blocking a punt, setting up a the score at the end of the game with a huge kickoff return. That area of their team is very well coached and performed very well in that game. Sometimes you lose sight of that. I'm going to go back to what we been preaching is, special teams. We got to win the battle of field position, win the battle of special teams in this upcoming game. We need to continue to improve in all phases of our special teams and that what we worked hard on during the bye week
Sipple again: Going back to that bye week coach, did you see anything that fueled your optimism about your offense?
Callahan: Well Steve, you like to sit there and make all these statements but i can't. All i know is we have worked hard to get better and continue to work hard to get better. Now, how that comes through, i don't know, all i know is that the players are getting confidence, working hard, improving and focusing on the techniques in the areas that we need better at. But how do you know until you get up against competition. We tried to get best on best last week, we worked against our defense, considerable during the week, so we got the best competition, the best matchups, for practice purposes, but until you get under the lights, how do you know. I wont make any statements to that fact or bold predictions about what we are going to do. All we need to do is focus in on what we can get done, that's all we can control.
Tim (San Antonio Express news): Good morning bill. After 3 games, is your offense where you hoped it would be in the season?
Callahan: We haven't played our best football yet, for that matter anybody has. It's still early yet . We have a lot of good football left in our team and in our offense in general, so we keep pushing and pressing on. I've seen offenses, that have struggled throughout the year and then came out late. A good indication of that is the patriot early on for their run to the Superbowl. So anything can happen. I remember a team we played in the Superbowl. the Buc's sputtered in the beginning and then late in the year, they exploded. They kept improving and getting better. That's the message to our kids. You can cite so many examples, some people start hot and get rolling out. What can you say, it is what it is. You gotta make adjustments, you learn about personal, you gotta get people in the right spots. Each game is different, because of the matchups and everything you see. Each week changes, so how you adapt to the opponent on a week to week basis is where it's at.
Tim again: How much do you feel like, having a chance to take stock in the first 3 games have benefited your team and get to where you are at.
Callahan: Well it only helps if we come out and win. I think we used the time intelligently and wisely. We documented every tendency. We looked at everything introspectively, in terms of what we are doing, how we are doing it, in all phases. It's not just offense, but special teams is another area we are trying to get better or where we can improve. Also on defense, we need to keep making steps. Defense is playing well, but we can play better. We can play better collectively as a football team, and the bye week lets you take inventory of where you at, and take a step back and look at the big picture and go forward. I have always enjoyed bye weeks, because i have always gotten a lot of out it to see where we are at, the players are at, allows us to get a little healthier, and you get an extra week to prepare on the opponent.
More questions are in the interview, but i just posted the first few of them.
