Callahan on the running backs
I asked Coach Bill Callahan this morning if he was worried about either Lucky or Glenn being conditioned to take 15-20 carries a game, given how much practice they've missed this fall.
His answer: "The cardiovascular I'm not concerned about. it's more the mental reps that you get on the field, the little things in terms of schematics and techniques that they're missing out. But I'm pretty positive and pretty confident that they can catch up in a hurry, especially Marlon. He's been back for us for a while now."
Last week, offensive coordinator Shawn Watson was presented a similar question about Lucky and Glenn.
"I don't think we'll be able to teach them anymore about what we do in terms of blitz pickup, in terms of footwork and run reads. They know that stuff," Watson said. "It's just the (timing) element. You can get them back into that if you get far enough out in front of it. Part of that, too, is being a natural, a natural player -- which both of them are."
Glenn sat out practice Sunday night, which may or may not mean anything. Watson said last week head trainer Mark Mayer wasn't having them practice unless they were 100 percent.
"I haven't been concerned with it," Watson said about the injuries, "because I trust what Mark's doing and the work the kids are putting into it, and the plan we have for them."
On Monday morning, Callahan said he wasn't going to back himself into a corner by making a prediction on how much Glenn could go on Saturday against Nevada. "I'm just going to take a look at it day by day and see where he's at."
If Glenn is not full strength, are the young lads -- Culbert, Castille, Helu, etc. -- ready to carry the rock in a tight game?
"If that situation presents itself, and that's the hand you're dealt, then that's what you're playing with," Watson said. "In football you always have your contingencies lined up. You've always got your plan A, B and C. And in coach's case, A, B, C and D. We always have contingency plans."
Anyhow, it feels good to be here at game week finally.
Miss. State over LSU on Thursday, right?
