Lincoln – After nearly three full weeks of fall camp, Head Coach Bill Callahan was able to step back and reflect on the progress the team has made following a two-hour practice in full pads inside Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

“We got a lot of work done in a relatively short period of time today,” Callahan said. “The bulk of our work in terms of contact and scrimmaging is done with, so what we wanted to do today was go out and get a good, crisp, fast practice. The players responded very well to it, which really bodes well for our team heading into game week.”

Although today’s practice may have been shorter in terms of duration, the length of fall camp has actually been extended for the Huskers this season. In past years, the third week of fall camp has also included the start of classes for the Huskers, but due to the academic schedule this year, players were able to devote more time to workouts in the final week of camp.

“We have more reps this year than we’ve ever had, “ Callahan said. “The way the schedule fell in the third week, we’d normally have school at that time. Since we didn’t have that this year, we were able to meet in the mornings and go through our walk-throughs. It was almost like being able to have an extra practice and it have us more time to teach and go into detail, which really helped us.”

Callahan also commented on Friday’s announcement of seniors Bo Ruud, Brett Byford and Zack Bowman as team elected captains for the 2007 season, saying that he’s not surprised by the team’s selection of these three individuals.

“All three of those guys are great kids,” he said. “They come from great families with great parents. As players, they set the right example. They’ve worked extra hard to get where they’re at and I commend them for that. But I’ve also told our entire senior class that we have so many great senior leaders that just relying on those three won’t be enough. It’s going to be the entire class that leads this team and that’s the message I sent to our team.”

Nebraska will return to the practice field on Sunday evening when the UNL student body is invited to watch practice. The Huskers will move into their normal in-season schedule on Monday, when the players have an off day before resuming practice on Tuesday afternoon.
