Cally only cares about wins

unless you are in the title hunt, the polls are about useless. We are not in the hunt, so there is no reason to worry about style points. (any opponent just getting 3 points, especially in thier house, is style points)
We Need our Offense to score more, period. the season is half over and we are 6-1. More impressive wins would have us higher than 20 in the polls. A 18 point win on the road is a good win but getting out gained in the second half does not look well in the voters eyes.
Do you really think that voters look at who outgained who in the second half as a deciding factor as to where to place teams in the polls. They don't have a whole lot of time to look at games and stats before they have to send in there votes so that the official polls can be out on Sunday afternoon. I would bet pretty good money that they do not even look at yards after halftime in games for all games let alone a game where a team won 21-3 on the road.

Also, how high do you think we would of moved up if we won the game 35-3 or 35-10. I doubt that the movement would of been all that significant to warrant trying to run up the score.

I posted this earlier, but If we win the big games, the polls will take care of themselves. If we beat texas, those close wins will disappear. If we play texas close but win the rest of the games I think we will get a fair ranking. just take care of business and we will be fine

Last couple years we've been losing 21-3 on the road, now were winning. Can't complain
:yeah

To the original poster, how is college football really that much different than the NFL? There is a division title. The winners of the 2 divisions play each other. The winner of that game plays in the big money game. Once you lose 1 game, it is pretty much out of the picture for a national title, so we are playing to get into the BCS. If NU ends the regular season 11-1, loses to UT in the Big 12 title, they will probably still get an at large. I don't really see NU having a chance at the title for this season, who knows though, in college football anything can happen.

I believe just two years ago, people were saying that Callahan didn't care about winning. He just wanted to show people that his offense can work. It is amazing how quickly people can change their tunes.

I agree with you for the most part, but about the polls, I don't.

At this point, the polls mean a few things to the Huskers. When I say "mean" I am saying what they have to do with the Huskers actually getting to a BCS game or, me getting to watch them on TV.

1. Beating higher ranked opponents = beating quality opponents for the most part. Yea, strength of schedule fits in there somewhere, but really in that department I am not sure we are not so hot. I am not sure how that fits into the BCS nowa days, tho

2. You play higher ranked teams, you get on TV. Party. :woo

Now that the BCS comes out, we have a poll that really means something.

I agree with all of you that say that if we would play more aggressively we would win by a larger margin and would have a higher ranking. However, I don't think we will win the National Title this year so the rankings don't mean too much. What matters is getting the W because then we will hold steady or move up a couple spots. As long as week keep winning we will eventually move up to the top 5. At that point, it will once again not matter whether or not we win big as long as we're winning and maintaining our ranking. Just my 2 cents.

I was not just talking about this last game. If a team gets into a pattern of pulling in the reins once they have a lead, what wil happen when we are ahead by say 14-21 points and all of a sudden the opposing team gets a jolt of momentum and scores a couple times. Will our team be able to turn it back on and win or do we go into overtime at home against a kansas type school and eek out a win that we could have and should have put away in the 3rd qtr.

That is all I am saying. I am glad we are winning the close games on the road but I am a firm believer that you play your best at all times.

If a boxer knew that he was ahead in rounds in a fight and pulled back and coasted the rest of the fight, all it would take is a lucky blow and he is in trouble and might not recocover.

In college football these days, most teams have very good and competitive players when given a chance are good enough to beat almost any other team.

I guess we will not agree on that, but as far as would we be higher rated than 20-21 if we had put the last three teams away more convincingly, YES I DO believe we would have. The season is only half over and any team can lose or win any give week. Do I really think that we will play for the national title this year, NO is there a chance we could. YES there is, and the better we position ourselves each week the better our chances go up.

Calli is doing a good job with this team and we are a year or two from being a national power, but why not try to instill that type of attitude in the players now and let it continue to be a part of this team for years to come.

GBR

sure running the ball was fine when we have the lead but like some of you guys are saying if you wanna move up in the poles we have to put up more points cuase we should of put up at least 30 or 40 points on those purple nit wits, but hey a win is a win though

Anybody watch MNF tonight?

The Cardinals were miraculously ahead by two TD's and had a few more chances to score if they'd stuck with the 8-12 yd passes that got them the lead.

Instead, they ran the ball to keep the ball out of Chicago's offense's hands.

Edgerin James had 54 yds on 37? carries???

I know it's not polite to run up the score...But you also need to insure wins.

I'm not the original poster, but :WTH ???

In college football...(Without a playoff)..EVERY game is Life or Death and MUCH more excitin'. ((Plus you have "Style Points" (ratings) to worry about)).

If you loose 1 game..you have to have help from other teams and/or voters to make it to the MNC.

If you loose another...You have to be lucky to make it to a BCS bowl.

If you loose a third or 4th...You have to be Notre Dame to get a half-decent invite.

Oh yeah..~34 teams end their season with a W..Maybe more if you count the ones not in Bowls.

In the NFL...you just have to coast along and win more than you loose and try to keep everyone healthy.

The REAL season doesn't start until the Playoffs.

My concern isn't the margin of victory it's how sloppy we've looked late in games. The KU game as an example. Fortuneately they came through in the OT but still. There is some concern that the late game performance is an issue of being able to finish rather than simply playing for the win. It begs the question. Is it part of the game plan or simply a loss of focus and executution? I don't know. I hope it's the game plan. I guess we'll find out on Saturday.

I feel your pain. I'm concerned that our much improved O-line still a work in progress.
