Salinas, CA -- Seven people, including a number of children, were hospitalized and a 24-year-old man was arrested for child endangerment in Salinas after a lit barbecue pit was brought into an apartment, according to police.
The Salinas Fire Department initially responded to the Atlantic Avenue apartment at approximately 9 a.m. Christmas Day after receiving a report that three children had stopped breathing. Firefighters removed a still hot barbecue pit from the apartment and discovered the children, as well as several adults, were breathing but lethargic and incoherent, Salinas police said.
Emergency personnel suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from the barbecue.
Juan Luis Rubio, 24, was booked into Monterey County Jail on child endangerment charges for allegedly bringing the barbecue into the apartment earlier that morning after he became cold.
According to police, all of the victims were expected to recover.
