CFB Matrix Talent Rankings and Coach Effect

This seems like an interesting site. But they don't do a particularly good job of explaining their process. This is the first time I've actually seen a talent ranking - which seems to be mostly based on average recruiting class ranking. Then they do a "Coach Effect" which I've never really been able to find a great explanation of either but mainly comes down to which team was "expected" to win based on the talent available with some adjustment for home/away.

Anyway, this is the first time I've seen their talent ranking list. Pretty similar to other lists but kind of confirms the "talent" on the roster.

Here are their "Coach Effect" rankings for all current Power 5 coaches. It seems like they are going back 8 years but I'm not sure why some coaches are shown from previous schools but others - like Riley - only have the stats for the time they've been at their current school.

That's exactly what it is. Talent & Locations vs coaching. Bascially, in theory, a more talented team should win on a neutral field every time, but if the lesser talented team wins, it's attirbuted to coaching. Since we don't play on neutral fields, we adjust for home & away, and then apply it to guys "coaching up" their teams. Riley is a lifetime + coach, but last year had a negative due to so many bad losses.

Riley is on the list twice, at 13 and at 51.
Yeah, the 13 was from his time at OSU, and the 51 is at NU.
Actually I think the #13 line is for his entire time at both schools (thus the -6 from last year) while the #51 is just last year.

I hadn't noticed that he was at #13 so they must have accidentally listed the #51 line.
That's probably right. IIRC, when Dave posted his numbers early last year, Riley was over 1 for his career CE.

It's amazing to me what Troy Calhoun can continue to do at Air Force with the restrictions he gets regarding size of his players. What a freaking great coach. Air Forces talent level is in the bottom 20 and he continually gets them to 9-10 wins.

I love watching the academies. Especially Air Force when they start conference play.

At least it has Bill Snyder right. One of the better coaches of all-time IMO. That place will be garbage when he leaves again.

Since 93' K St has 6 top-10 finishes and 13 top 25 finishes. This program will NEVER see that again.

Hard to argue much here. Nebraska with talent that puts us right on the cusp of top-25. Michigan State and Penn State just a little higher. Wisconsin a little lower. We should be battling Wiscy for the west title in most years, and winning it at least half of the time, IMO.

If we want to be in the top 10 then we need top 10 talent.

If we want to compete for national titles then we have to upgrade our talent across the board.

We should be stomping the dog snot out of them year in and year out, make them our bitches.

might be asking a lot. Literally on the other end of the spectrum. Wisconsin is the only team we have a losing record against in the whole Big ten. Not to mention, the margins of victory.

There are no size restriction at academies. That's a myth.

But it is impressive; and Navy has been even more impressive.
