I don't keep tabs on Chadron, but since it's Western-ish Nebraska my guess is: hunting, meth, fishing, child molesters, camping, child porn, golf, drinking, etc.

Well . . . it's fairly accurate for rural Nebraska. Particularly the hunting, fishing, camping, golf, drinking. Throw in the Huskers and local high school sports and that hits the high points.

Unfortunately meth is a real problem in rural Nebraska . . . more so than in the largest cities in my experience. (Different drugs of choice.) The chimos/child porn is no more common in rural Nebraska (thank god) than it is in the bigger cities.

So, to rephrase what you just said....

In rural Nebraska you can hunt, fish, camp, golf and drink if that is what you so choose to do.....

We also have:

Meth = larger cities have other drug problems

Child molesters and child porn = no different in rural than in large cities.

Pretty much sums up why I made my comment.

BTW...when I lived in a larger city, I knew three families that were torn apart because of kids having problems with meth.

I'm just going by what I read from the local news from back home. Top stories of the last couple weeks: Several underage drunk-driving accidents (some resulting in deaths), some deaths from people drowning at the lake, incest charges, hail damage, fundraiser, meth, storms, etc. It's not all bad, but it's seems pretty bad for such small communities.

There really isn't much else to report on in small towns before it just becomes gossip columns

. . . the flip side being that there isn't always a lot of local topics to talk about each week other than the police blotter. (Or at least not things that people want to hear/read about.)

Not a lot of of cocaine in Nebraska. Some . . . but crack, meth, and prescription painkillers are a lot more common in my experience.

I'd throw in alcohol fueled disturbing the peace/domestic violence as common pastimes as well if we want a fairly accurate list.

I will be working at Chadron State college. I don't mind smaller cities as long as their close to bigger cities say 30 miles away. The wife wants to move there so I guess my mind is already made up. =)

I moved to a smaller city a few years back. But I had just the opposite in mind. I sought out a small city that wasn't too close to a large city. My thinking was that, when small town is near a large city, the small town has little to offer. Everyone heads into the large city for shopping, sports, entertainment, etc. I think a small town that's out by itself generally has more to offer than the same sized small town that's near a large city. Then again, the small town I chose is around 10X larger than Chadron. I moved from the D.C. area with a metro population of roughly 5 million to a little Midwestern town of 50k. And I'm quite happy with the move.
