Championships your teams have won

How many championships have you been alive for when "your" team won the title in their sport? I've been pretty lucky - I've seen many titles from teams I support.

My teams are:

College - Huskers. The two main sports I follow are Football and Volleyball, and I've followed them since the early 70s (football) and the late 80s (volleyball). So no bandwagon here.

MLB - Cubs. It's been a rough century.

NFL - Bears.

NBA - Bulls

So the championships I've been alive for:

1985 - Da Bears. Ditka's greatest team. Destroyed the Patsies in the Super Bowl. The only bad thing about this game was that Walter Payton didn't get a TD - they gave the ball to The Fridge instead.

1991 - Da Bulls. First championship. I thought it was over when LA won the first game. But that four-game run to close the Finals was glory.

1992 - Da Bulls. I had my concerns about the Blazers with Clyde the Glide. But the Bullies handled them well enough. Fun series.

1993 - Da Bulls. The Threepeat. (and no, I'm not giving Pat Riley a dollar for saying that). Horace Grant reaching back in the lane to block KJ's shot after he got past the free-throw line.

1994 - Huskers. Redemption against Miami. "‘It’s not where I’ve been... it’s where I’m going, fatass!”

1995 - Da Bulls. Michael returns after his silly sojourn into baseball. Even wearing #45, he was still great.

1995 - Husker Volleyball. CJ. Billie Winsett. Allie Weston. Hell of a team and a great win (against Texas) that was sadly overshadowed by the football team. This team doesn't get enough credit.

1995 - Huskers. Greatest team of all time. The whole season was one big celebration.

1996 - Da Bulls. 72-10. Greatest record of all time. One of the greatest teams of all time, up there with the legendary Celtics and Lakers squads.

1997 - Da Bulls. Bittersweet, since the team exploded weeks after the second threepeat. MJ's swan song as a Bull, sealed with the strip of Karl Malone in the closing seconds. A gut-wrenching season, and Finals.

1997 - Huskers. Frosty & Co. send Dr. Tom out a winner. The Miracle in Missouri. The only bad thing - Michigan ducked out the back door with some wooden plaque and now they yammer on about co-national champions.

2000 - Husker Volleyball. Cook's perfect season. Greicha Cepero. Laura Pilakowski. Lindsay Wischmeier. Heck of a team. Heck of a run.

2006 - Husker Volleyball. A team in turmoil, but so talented they couldn't not win. Dominated in many ways by Sarah Pavan, a truly transcendent player.

Pretty much my list but having to include 70-71 Skers Football. And the fact I don't follow baseball anymore since the 60's Yanks, Berra, Ford, Howard, Mantle and Maris.

Did luv the Bulls and MJ

Unitas- that's it.

Never followed womens volleyball until my niece started playing. They got some game.

Technically I was alive for the 70 and 71 championships, but I did a lot of drinking from a bottle and puking back then.

Come to think of it.... that sounds a lot like me in the 90s, too. :blink:

 
Husker football: 94, 95, 97

Duke basketball: 91, 92, 01, 10

Dallas Cowboys: 92, 93, 95

Pittsburgh Penguins: 90-91 season, 91-92 season, 08-09 season

I've tried hard to get into baseball. It's just such a long, long season, and it's so boring to watch on tv. I used to try to watch the Mariners back when I was younger because I really liked Ken Griffey, Jr. NBA is hard to get into for me as well. I usually just watch the playoffs and pull for teams that have players that I like.

 
My favorite teams are:

NBA--Oklahoma City Thunder

NFL--Minnesota Vikings

MLB--Minnesota Twins

College--Nebraska Cornhuskers (basketball and football only, don't really follow volleyball)

Soccer: Manchester City

Championships my teams have won since I've been a fan and alive.

Manchester City: 2011-12 Barclay's Premier League Champions

Manchester City: 2011 (or was it '10?) F.A. Cup Champions

 
Well, the Pack have 13 of 'em and I think we're familiar with the Nebraska ones so no need to rehash that. I'm a mild Braves fan and they won it in like '96 or whatever, but they are just like their fellow Atlanta team the Hawks - always make the playoffs but never win anything. But I mostly don't give a sh#t. And occasionally I'll bandwagon the Mavericks and TWolves. I guess I could list each of Tiger Woods' 72 PGA Tour titles, but I feel lazy.

NBA - Bulls during the MJ years. Then Jerry Kraus screwed it all up and I lost interest. I generally don't pay a lot of attention to the NBA now but have been a mild Mavericks fan for some time (bet that didn't surprise anyone, although the handle is of the movie variety) and I like what I see out of the Thunder.

1986 - Mets. Sorry to all the Sox fans. At least you're over it by now, right?

1991 - Bulls. Finally past the Pistons. MJ right then left.

1992 - Bulls. Jordan shrugs.

1993 - Bulls. Not hard to cheer against the Round Mound of Sound

1994 - Huskers. Sapp looked the the game was played at 14,000 ft.

1995 - Bulls. The world back as it should be.

1995 - Husker Volleyball. Probably when I realized we had a VBall team - more of an indictment on myself than the program.

1995 - Huskers. Our team was great but the look on Spurrier's face was priceless.

1996 - Bulls. Without peer.

1997 - Bulls. MJ - I love ya, but that should have been your final shot.

1997 - Huskers. The Mizzou game was on two channels in Lincoln - one of them didn't get back from commercial break until after the Huskers scored in overtime. I'll never forgive them for that.

1997 - Broncos. At long last. "This one's for John" is pretty corny but it was the absolute truth.

1998 - Broncos. A ride off into the sunset. MJ should have done the same.

2000 - Husker Volleyball. I personally know about 1/3 of the team. Unbelievable. Only downside is I didn't watch them as much as I should have because I was mad at the change in General Admission seating at the Coliseum.

2006 - Husker Volleyball. Not sure how Colorado stole the one but Pavan ... what can you say?

2011 - Mavericks (I guess). Probably doesn't really count for me but I'm on somewhat of a drought without it so on the list it goes.

 
Unfortunately, outside of Nebraska, the only championship I can report is the 85 World Series for the Royals... when I was 3 months old. Since then, the Knicks haven't really been close. The Browns have been my team for all of a month now (not that they won anything anyway), but the Jets never won anything in my life. I'm not much of a hockey fan, but I root for the Flyers and Avs, but I can't really say they're "my teams". Heck, even in NASCAR, Mark Martin is my favorite driver, and he's come close, but no cigarillos either.

What prompted your switch to the Browns?

 
I have a friend who became a Bears fan for the duration of Tebow being a Bronco. He's now a Broncos fan again.

I root for the Tennessee Titans in the NFL, and we were 1 yard close in January 2000, and had some decent to excellent teams [2000, 2002, 2003, 2008] that never got to the Super Bowl. As well as some decent teams that did not make the Super Bowl, or qualify but should have, for the playoffs [2006, 2007, 2011]

My senior year in high school [2004-2005] saw the Red Sox finally winning it in October, beat the Yankees after being down 3 games to 0, then they went on to sweep the Cardinals in the World Series. I then watched that get followed up by the Spurs winning the NBA title in June in a thrilling 7 game series with the Detroit Pistons, was, at the time, my greatest sports season ever. Except for that whole "Callahan" thing in the fall of 2004.... :bang

Then it happened again! The Spurs won it all by sweeping the Cavs in June 2007, and followed it up by the Red Sox winning it all, sweeping the Rockies that October. That was my 2nd greatest sports season ever...except for that whole "Callahan" thing in the fall of 2007.... :bang

The Spurs also narrowly missed winning it all in 2004[lost conference semi-finals], 2005[lost conference semi-finals] and 2008 [lost conference finals]

I'm hoping the Spurs can add "one for the thumb" this summer! :koolaid2:

My teams fared pretty well in the 90s. We all know about the Huskers but the 1997 season and 1998 Orange Bowl are some of my first Husker memories so I can't relish in the back-to-back years as much as I'd like. The Chiefs and Braves were rather dominant but never seemed to be great in the playoffs. Braves finally did win it in 1995. The Thunder weren't around until 2008 (I don't count Sonics history as ours). Unfortunately, the turn of the century didn't fare my team's well for sports. The Braves continued their division pennant streak until 2005 but only went to the NLCS once in 2001. Kansas City went to the playoffs a few times but haven't had consistent winning in a while. Pittsburgh is the only team to come through for me in this century, maybe OKC will too in a few weeks.
