Change on Defense

yeah i don't believe this. i'm gonna wait for confirmation before i'll let you rope me into believing o'hanlon was gonna start over someone that was made the starter already.
Didn't Mike Williams just jump ahead of Burkes at Left Tackle? And didn't Murtha just move over to right tackle this week?

No one is trying to 'rope you in' Jack....as far as I know, there are no deadlines set on position changes.

Earlier this week, Pelini told the media that some starting positions were still up for grabs. This could have been motivating 'coach speak', but I believe that he really wants players to earn it every day.

Also, Marvin Sanders has said a couple of times already that Thenarse was struggling with sticking to his assignments. He said he focuses more on the 'big hit' than making the proper reads and adjustments. The way Pelini coaches, I could definitely see his preference for assignment discipline over knock-out blows...regardless of who the better athlete is (assuming that Thenarse is still struggling with his assignments).

Personally, I just want to see the best guys for the team out on that field.

ray 233, i may not like to but i will always admit when i am wrong. and it appears that i was wrong here. Big Red Breakfast, O'hanlon is going to start over Rt. Dont know as i believe it will stay this way all year, but congrats to that young man and hey, i would rather have him play if he is in the right spots as opposed to a guy out of position all the time just looking for the big hit. I believe this may be what RT needs, maybe he assumed he was a lock but now we will see him shore up his play. I think it is obvious that if both understand the D the same then RT would play as he is the better pure player.

I was wrong, i hate being wrong, but i was, lol

Rickey needs to step it up. This is his third year here, and the time for not grasping the defense is over. Congrats to O'Hanlon...it'll be exciting to see a guy like him make the start.

If Ricky wants his starting job back then he's just gonna have to take it to a "Ho nubba leba"

JFYI, that was Mike Smith that jumped Burkes, not Mike Williams!!

LT:

65

Mike Smith*, 6-6, 285, So., Las Vegas, Nev.

72

Jaivorio Burkes*, 6-5, 325, So., Phoenix, Ariz.

Congrats to O'Hanlon!! From watching him play he's a very talented young man and there shouldn't be much of a talent drop off between him and Thenarse. They are both excellent ball players, Thenarse being more physical, but he will do well and I'm excited for him.

It's true...

"Pelini, who has made it a point to strengthen Nebraska’s walk-on program, also told the crowd Matt O’Hanlon, a senior walk-on from Bellevue, probably will start at free safety ahead of junior Rickey Thenarse, and that the status of injured offensive tackle Lydon Murtha probably will be a game-time decision."

Sweet Vindication!!! :corndance

Well, I'm glad it was confirmed. I like this board, and certainly don't want to be known as 'that' guy.

since we know this now and it's been confirmed...what does everyone think of the change?

Let the best players play. If O'Hanlon is playing the best, then he starts and should see the majority of the snaps.

You gave us info that you clearly stated as info you heard.

I have no problem with that.

I have no problem with this move if he is indeed the best player right now and gives us the best chance to win. Just because I like a player doesn't mean I'm going to be upset if another player I'm not familiar with starts over him. Congrats to him and I hope he makes the most of it.

Gotta like the two deep here if both continue to improve. Still think we'll see a lot of Thenarse, and not just on ST. We aren't in a possition where we can redshirt him, so let's hope he get's it pretty quick.
