Coaches Poll is out

USM already receiving votes. Very surprising. But I do think NU should at least 13 or higher. Lot of big expectations with pretty much the entire offense returning.
Yeah, but our defense sucked last year. Expectations don't win championships, or we'd have a few over the last 4 years.

Haha! Somone voted FSU at #1!? Here's a convo. I had with a buddy of mine on facebook who is a diehard FSU fan. He is actually very knowledgeable about football, yet has never strapped up in pads a day in his life. I love the guy, but he drinks waaay too much of the FSU kool-aid and I've told him that FSU has been one of the highest underachieving teams in the past decade. I've put him in his place before and have pissed him off when I've told him that FSU recruits top 5 to top 10 talent, yet doesn't produce SQUAT in terms of team success on the field. He thinks his team has the right coaches this year to bring them back to prominence....I'll hold my breath on that.

Here it is. He sent me a link that has FSU's defensive line ranked in the top 10 followed by his comment. Then the debate commenced:

Me: Tons o talent and potential that's for sure (year in and year out with recruiting)....but can the coaching/development bring them back to prominence? We will see sir. Plus there are so many other elements that come into play to make a great team. NEB will never be able to recruit like the Noles, however, I think a few diamonds each year coupled with our current culture/staff, can bring NEB to a BCS title game.

Him: LOL, ok now you're reaching. In the last ten years tell me who won the national title that wasn't loaded.

Me: I am basing it off of past recruiting rankings. Even NEB didn't deliver a top 5 to top 10 recruiting class when they dominated in '94 and '95. However, NEB was LOADED with talent on both sides of the ball. My point is....it's coaching, development, culture and all the other aspects as well that bring the team together for optimal success. Teams in the past such as Boise St, Wiscy, TCU have mediocre recruiting seasons, ie 30 to 60th in recruiting rankings, yet produce very good quality teams that can contend in BCS title games. NEB develops talent, ie Suh, Amukamara, Dennard, David, Helu, etc. David was a 2-start athlete, Dennard and Amukamara were both 3-stars according to rivals I believe. As you know, it's not all about recruiting stars. FSU should know this quite well by now considering the past 10 years, they have had HUGE success with recruiting talent/potential, yet have fallen short in becoming a successful team in regards to the win/loss column. FSU needs to get over that hump and start showing me that they can be the team they have the potential to be based on the high talent/potential they recruit.

Him: Yep, and you can blame that on the former regim that was around too long. Since Fisher came in they are back in the top 10 consistently, won both bowl games, 4-0 against Miami and Florida don't have to tell me about development. I could say the same about your Huskers about showing me they can play up to higher standards I was in Madison last year for that debacle. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, stars matter. The D-Line is full of absolute ballers!

Me: Stars matter to an extent. LSU and Alabama would agree that stars matter, yet they have amazing coaching as well. I want to see FSU in a BCS title game with all this talent. It's put up or shut-up for not only FSU, but NEB as well in my opinion. I can't wait for the season to start. I think FSU has the potential to make it to a BCS game this year, we'll see.
You're friend is bragging about being 4-0 against the worst UF and UM squads in 35 years? He's a dumbass.

Aaaand I don't disagree with you Saunders. You make a strong valid point that I didn't even realize and conjure up to mention.

I'm better than Knapp.

You can quote me on that too. ;)

And here's the rundown:

LSU--slightly overrated

Alabama--perfectly rated

USC--slightly underrated

Oklahoma--slightly overrated

Oregon--slightly underrated

Georgia--perfectly rated

Florida State--immensely overrated

Michigan--slightly overrated

South Carolina--slightly underrated

Arkansas--slightly underrated

West Virginia--immensely overrated

Wisconsin--perfectly rated

Michigan State--overrated

Clemson--underrated

Texas--overrated

Nebraska--slightly overrated

TCU--perfectly rated

Stanford--perfectly rated

Oklahoma State--overrated

Virginia Tech--underrated

Kansas State--perfectly rated

Boise State--overrated

Florida--overrated

Notre Dame--overrated

Auburn--overrated
That's 13 overrated teams (including 2 immensely overrated), and just 6 underrated teams. You do realize that 25 teams have to be rated, right? Do you have a handful of incredible underrated teams that didn't make the top 25?
Not if he's got them something like this:

USC

Alabama

LSU

Oregon

Oklahoma

Georgia

South Carolina

Arkansas

Michigan

Clemson

Florida State

Wisconsin

Virginia Tech

Michigan State

West Virginia

Texas

TCU

Nebraska

Stanford

*Unranked team???*

Kansas State

Oklahoma State

Boise State

Florida

Notre Dame

nu will not be a great team this year,,,just don,t have the studs needed...probably will not have in the future,, not able to recruit the better players or not getting the right ones.

16 is a good place to start. We'll move up a couple of spots by the time conf play starts. That's when the real season begins.

By overrated, I don't mean they shouldn't be in the Top 25. There are about 4 overrated teams I feel shouldn't be part of the Top 25, the last 4.

-Not sure how Oregon will fare w/ a new QB and a very offensive focused Pac12. They'll play 6-7 teams that can easily hang 40 on them. One turnover or a little bad luck and they are a 3 loss team.

-West Virginia should shock some people this year. Their defense is going to have to hold up to much better offenses, and we know first hand how tough it is to go into a new conference, but their offense will put up some big numbers on those Big12 defenses.

-I don't think Okie State is overrated. That's a team coming off a couple spectacular season with a top 5 coach. New QB, but they are ranked below NU, yet have proven much more of the last few years than we have.
I'll agree with you about Oklahoma State. Watching West Virginia in the Big XII might make for some long games as they'll be constantly scoring and be constantly scored against.

I like how the huskers came out in this, I expected them to be rated closer to 18 or 19 so this is a good start now the season can get rolling.
