Cody Green Never Will Start?

The good news for Cody Green is that the coaches liked enough of him from a practice standpoint that he didn't get redshirted. I know there were depth issues, but they still had confidence in him being the #2 guy as a freshman. Last years experience was a big positive for him...he just needs a little more time is all to get the right amount of experience and confidence. That will translate into better leadership as well.
He didn't get redshirted because all that stood behind him was Washington and Kellogg Jr. Martinez was mostly playing slot receiver on the scout team, didn't get any solid QB reps until this Spring.
Green didnt redshirt because Spano tore his knee up twice. I find it rather odd that a player tears his knee up in the spring and was "ready" to go by the time fall camp came around. Then rips it apart again, same knee. Its pretty obvious that he was rushed back, we all know the reasons. Ideally the coaches would have love to redshirt green, he wouldve benefit greatly. Im not saying this as fact just as a opinion tying the two circumstances together, bash me if you will.

I think Martinez played the scout team QB last year. I remember reading that he was mirroring Taylor during the week of VTech.
He spent most the year at WR on scout team from what I recall, Pelini even mentioned it around Spring Ball, as did Watson, that it was their first real chance to see what he could do with the offense.
Now that think about you prob are right. My fault, its been a long day playing Ncaa '11.

not only did they give him the #2 job...they gave him the reigns for a game...if you don't trust him you just keep on starting lee

Spano was given medical clearance to resume football activities. Some people are just haunted with terrible knee ligaments.. I have a friend who is the same way..

Spano was given irresponsibly early medical clearance.

He tore his ACL and he was back up and running in what, 6 months? Way before a normal timetable for return.

He tore it in late March I believe, I may be wrong but it was during spring ball. Then he tore it again in august.

But you are right. Their is no way he should have even been consider to play this past fall, sit the year out, then comeback at 100% in 2010.

Here's my take on what probably happened. First of all, athletes the caliber of those playing D1 college ball heal faster than most of us who post here. Spano could see the handwriting on the wall when Green was recruited. In his mind, he wanted to get on the field as quickly as possible in order to nail down his spot. I'm sure he put a little pressure in order to get clearance. There's been some talk of Green redshirting this year, but I think there's absolutely no way it happens because he doesn't want to get passed by T-Mart and then start on par with the future recruits. If you really think about it, what was Spano out by coming back too early and blowing his knee again? As things turned out, he would still more than likely been behind Green and T-Mart becoming possibly the #4 which it seems he still is. He took a gamble, and it didn't turn out. However, I don't think he was out anymore than if he'd have sat out the 09' season.

That is a possiblity. I dont blame Kody for pushing himself to get their, I prob do the samething. But somebody has to step in and have the best of intersets of Kody. It just seems odd that he came back so fast and nobody was 2nd guessing it like Dobson, Bo or Watson.

I have voiced those same comments since the first time I saw him play. He may turn it on this year, but from what I have seen I doubt he will ever play a major roll in Nebraska football

We see other true freshmen playing and playing in much more difficult offenses than ours. May not be setting the world on fire, but are good enough to keep others off the field. He has not shown that ability.

I wish him luck and hopes he develops the skills needed. He has talent no question, but I see us sticking with Lee this year and if not, going to Martinez.
The thing is, none of this should be a surprise.

It's just that when we got Green, everyone was like "Wow! 4 star QB! Tommie Frazier here we come again."

But anyone who paid more attention than the stars and the video game stats he put up in HS knew we were getting a strong athlete who was just very, very raw in his development as a passer. Some true freshmen QBs from from pro-style offenses in HS, or are just plain more polished quarterbacks. That's never been Green. He's always been a project passer, but I think there's little doubt he's worked hard and made strong strides.

Taylor is just a more dynamically athletic, and way less polished passer. So if Lee were to go down, I'd bet that barring huge strides, we don't completely blow up our offense and keep Martinez in the wildcat.

I guess this article does provide one useful thing: reign in the enthusiasm of those who thought Green would start for 3-4 years from day 1. But if Green won't start for these reasons, then Taylor and certainly Jamal Turner will never start, either.

It wouldn't bother me one tiny iota if we "blow up" our 99th rated multiple offense. I'll miss five 1st downs a game like another hole in my head.

Martinez looks like he could be a playmaker and oh boy.....we need all of them we can get.

As a physical therapist in training, I have to disagree. 6-8 months is a normal timetable for return to explosive activity such as football. Given the facts that he was probably rehabbing a lot harder than your average knee patient, the Husker training/medical staff is on their game, and he's young and his body is resilient, I would say 6 months sounds about right to give him the green light.

6 months WOULD have been fine. Kody tore his ACL on April 13, 2009 and then had surgery either late April or early May. He was running full speed drills on August 11th, 2009 when he tore it again. That's less than 4 months from the day he tore it the first time, and between 3 to 3 1/2 months after his surgery. He was most definitely rushed in hopes we could redshirt Green, which if that would have happened, he would still be the fan favorite today

One season as a freshman does not make a quarterback. The lightbulb may kick on for Cody and he may just absolutely explode on the field. Or he may falter. Who knows? But good grief, give the kid a chance! He's only a sophomore!

I totally agree. I just think that the hype surrounding him when he came into the program was so great that last season was a total letdown in the eyes of the kool-aid drinkers. That said, the hype was unfair and unwarranted for the most part. I still have hope for him. Regardless, I like where we are at in terms of QBs for the future.
