Cory Ross info

Thanks for those updates motorboat! I have been following him as well and he has done a pretty good job of returning the ball in pre-season.

You know, with what he's shown already, even if the Raven's feel that have to cut him some other team will pick him up. At the very least, he's a wonderful special teams pick-up, and a damn good backup at the tailback position. A lot of teams will give him a look if Baltimore doesn't keep him.

:yeah He has something to offer for a team, and I think he will play for someone this season.

 
Yeah, I don't see Cory Ross making the Ravens team. They are just too loaded at running back with Jamel Lewis, Musa Smith, and P.J. Daniels. The Ravens will likely try to put him on their practice squad but he won't clear waivers cuz some other team will pick him up. A few teams that could use a running back are the Falcons (just traded Duckett), Eagles (need insurance for Buchalter), Jets (Barlow will not be the man all year), 49ers (need the depth).

 
Falcons traded Duckett because they have Norwood, Eagles have Moats, Jets have a Blaylock, Houston. I agree the 49ers may need some depth, too - Maurice Hicks is no.2 and he's not the answer from what I've heard.

Let's hope for the best. (the Jets don't have anyone particularly good at RB, I'm just noting that they've got a lot of guys there. Curtis Martin hasn't retired either, afaik.)

I am sooo happy for Porkchop. I have always said that he would be one of the players who would most benefit from Cally's offensive philosophy.......

 
I was just stating who I thought could use a running back. I have no idea if these teams are even looking at adding people in their backfield. The Eagles just had Stephen Davis in for a workout the other day but didn't offer him a contract.

 
Yeah, Cory Ross ought to start somewhere, IMO. :) I'd forgotten about the Eagles and Davis...hm.

You know...he should check out Denver...place where he's from, and I guarantee you if he signs there, one of these years he's going to break out as a 1,000-yd back...

Measuring up

At 5 feet 6, running back Cory Ross is the smallest player on the Ravens roster, but with a 15.7-yard average over three punt returns and 44 yards on two kickoff returns this preseason, the undrafted rookie free agent out of Nebraska is proving height doesn't matter.

"All I'm doing is catching the ball," said Ross, who is competing with B.J. Sams for a spot as a return specialist. "You have 10 other guys on the field who are working hard and trying to help you with the punt return and all you've got to do is run."

Koch may kick off

Punter Sam Koch said it's possible he will make the opening kickoff for the Ravens in their third preseason game Friday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Koch, a sixth-round draft pick out of Nebraska, kicked off for 72 yards in the fourth quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, placing the ball two yards into the end zone. Kickoff specialist Aaron Elling handled the bulk of the Ravens' kickoff duties last year, but if Koch is able to handle both punting and kickoff responsibilities, it could open up a roster spot.

"I've been working on kicking off and the more chances I can get out on the field the better off I am," Koch said. "Once we get into game action and game scenarios, I've been doing really well, and here at practice I've been refining my skills."

 
Ross is competing with B.J. Sams? Uh oh. AFAIK, Sams is a proven quality return specialist O_O

Good for Koch though!

 
B.J. Sams is a very good return man, but with the NFL being a business, they might go with Cory Ross due to the fact that they only have to pay him rookie minimum rather than paying more for Sams when they do about the same thing.

 
Hm, Cory Ross did very well in their latest preseason game agains the Vikes...(link)

6 carries, 23 yards to lead all Ravens rushers including Mike Anderson who had 7 carries, 11 yards; 1 catch for 5 yards; and 4 kickoff returns averaging 24.2 yards (Sams had 3 with a 20.7 average, which is even better news :) )

Look at the Sam Koch statline though. He's got a monster leg. 5 punts - averaging 51 yards a kick, with a long of 61.
