Cotton not big on excuses

Working on a column about Nebraska's offensive line.

A couple things become clear when you talk to Husker offensive line coach Barney Cotton.

1. Cotton's not big on excuses. "I know that we've had to fight through some guys getting banged up," he said. "But all teams get beat up. You play the cards you're dealt."

2. The NU coaches are very optimistic about the young offensive linemen in the system, including scholarship redshirts Nick Ash (6-5, 270), Jesse Coffey (6-7, 300), Brent Qvale (6-7, 330), and Jeremiah Sirles (6-6, 310).

Also, 6-7, 315-pound tackle Jermarcus "Yoshi" Hardrick, a transfer from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, has signed his letter of intent and will start classes at Nebraska in January, meaning he's set for spring ball.

"I really look forward to January when they start conditioning and working together," Cotton said. "I think there'll be some young blood in the room. There'll be some competition in the room. And competition is generally what breeds improvement."

Maybe hiring a 2nd o-line coach to compete with Barney would make him a better coach.

I actually factually LOLed at that.

Barney has had a tough year. I want to give him, Watson and Gilmore a pass because of all the injuries... but it's really hard to. It seems like other schools are able to overcome these injuries.

i think Cotton gets one more season, to at least, show some improvement. another HS year of O line play and he is gone. Watson, i just don't know, i am inclined to give him a little more rope, but not much. overall with the new influx of talent, we should be a little more competitive, but losing Suh will be tough on the D, so yes, next season the O better gel and produce!! <_<

Yeah I agree with this sentiment, let us all hope that the O-Line getting more depth and talent next season leads to great success otherwise we will see Bo pop a vein.

 
I'm seriously not trying to sound like a jerk, but am I the only one hoping that Barney doesn't have any more kids to give scholorships to.

 
I'm just amazed so many are willing to casually pass on arguably the worst coaching job in the history of NU.

112th in offense and "let's give SW some more year(s)" and see what he can do. Wow....

Amazingly, SW was even worse then Coz's 2007 defense but...."so what??". I suppose so.......heck, let's bring back Coz for the defense too, right? Coz at DC & SW as OC. That will make all us NU fans feel so warm and cosy.

It's a PC world at Nebraska.

He has a point. When Cosbohl ran the NU D to the depths of NCAA Football people were calling for his head. Why are more people not doing the same with Watson? I assume some are giving him a pass because of the 08 season.

My issue with Watson is he doesn't or can't develop schemes and plays which work best for the talent on hand. Callafraud had the same "do it my way" stubbornness. In a matter of a week Kelly, from Cincinnati, completely revamped his O when his first string QB went down with an arm injury. Why didn't Watson begin to adjust his O back in July - let alone during the season?

Oklahoma didn't and neither did USC for that matter.

I think Watson gets less grief from the Husker faithful than Coz just because of the overall record for the year. It's easier to take one of the worst offenses in college football when you have nine wins (and should have 12 wins) than it is to take one of the worst defenses in college football when you have 5 wins.

You can bet that if Nebraska had only 5 wins this year Watson would be under at least as much fire as Cosgrove was in 2007.

When I look at what "might have been" this year I get really piffed. I generally try to stay away from "Coach X has got to go" arguments, but I can't get past this one. Every time I thought our defense couldn't get better, it did, and every time I thought our offense couldn't get worse, it did. Look at the development of our quarterbacks over the course of the year. Why did neither Zac nor Cody show any real improvement? Why didn't the o-line show improvement? I don't like what I see from this staff.

I support Bo 100% because he is the coach of the Cornhuskers, so if Wats and co. stay then so be it. I will always love NU football, but I will not be disappointed if Watson and his crew depart for other pastures.

Concerning Coach Cotton,

I once had a boss who pointed out that there was a HUGE problem in my operational area of responsibility. He gave me a pep talk by saying -

"I like you and I'm pulling for you. I just hope, for your sake and the sake of your job, that you figure out a way to solve YOUR problem and solve it quickly." <_<

I got the point!
