All I know is that we've been really lucky to have such great kickers. If only we would have had one in 1993, we might be talking about a three-peat.
Everyone (that's not holding their shoes up) holds both hands up and wiggles their fingers along with the aaaahhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHH oooooooo kickoff yell. As the ball is kicked they pull their hands down. It's the same thing the band/flag girls do.
I'd be fine with the shoe idea if everyone did it....but they don't. It's small pockets, and like I said, when it gets cold or when it's inclement weather, they keep their shoes on and join everyone else.
Here's a link that explains where it came from. I remember the huge debate students had on facebook about this group. I think it makes us look stupid when some are doing one thing, and some are doing another. It leads people to start threads like this and say "What's going on here?" I don't mind it, but everyone needs to do it if it should be considered a new "tradition."

What do you suggest the students do? The Taking Back Gameday kids are trying to do stuff like this, but nobody takes them seriously...how can you ever get everyone to do it?

There are people doing the shoe thing up in the nosebleeds in Sec. 34 where I sit, so it's not only the students anymore.
I have no idea when it started. Seems to me that it predates Kunalic by a few years. It's a fun thing to do, and a better "tradition" if it starts spontaneously rather than have the soundsystem try to direct it, or the university in general try to start it. All traditions that start spontaneously, or for no apparent reason, are better. The spirit finger thing is equally good, although until this thread I didn't know it was called Spirit Fingers. And although I do the "aaaahhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHH OOOOOOOOO" thing, I don't do Spirit Fingers.

I don't really care so much if the students are doing the shoe thing, even if nobody else is. Rewatching the game on ESPN3 it looks pretty cool when they show the student section during kickoffs and you see EVERY person on the screen holding up their shoe.
There are a few people in my row in Sec. 31 that are doing it too. Even in the rain.

I totally agree it'd look cool if even MOST of the students did it. I like the way we support our kickers, but I am a little pessimistic about people doing it in inclement weather. I was there for 5 years (04-08 seasons) and never saw more than a few pockets. If it's catching on, that's cool, and I hope we can get more doing it. IIRC, we aren't the only school doing this. The link I posted in my last post states when it started. Again, the only thing I don't like is the split.

Watch the opening kickoff from the MSU game. The entire student section is doing it. And I remember them doing it at the tOSU game as well even in the rain.
