Cruises and cell service

Do cell phones work on cruise ships? Do cruise ships have phones you can pay for, and probably dearly for, while out at sea? My family is going on a five day cruise to Mexico in a few weeks and I'm tying up loose ends before we leave. I would like to check my VM once of twice per day and be reached in case of a family emergency. I have alltel service if that matters.

I think you are out of luck. Where do you think they will put the cell phone towers?

I don't even get service between Lincoln and Nebr City.

Satellite phones do work

Oops, thinking of Carribbean - Mexico west coast. If you are in sight of the coast you might - but don't know about Mexican cell phone service.

Man, you are going on vacation! You are trying to get away and have fun. Turn off the phone and go to the bar or the buffet. There is nothing you can do to help out things at home and the only thing VM will do is F up your vacation. The only worry you should have on a cruise is about falling overboard.

Man, I wish I could just not be in touch. I have an elderly parent that I do need to make myself accessible to in case of emergency.

The cruise line just got back to me and they do have full cell service while sailing. $2.49 a minute which I think is reasonable.
