CU offers Jon Embree HC job

Colorado has offered its head football coaching job to Jon Embree, according to legendary coach Bill McCartney, who himself was a candidate.
McCartney said that Embree, currently the Washington Redskins tight ends coach, has been given a formal offer, and CU is hoping he accepts and then hires former Buff great Eric Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator.

McCartney was a candidate to replace Dan Hawkins but said his plan all along, had he been named coach, was to hire Embree and Bieniemy on his staff and groom one of them to take over as head coach in two or three years. When it became clear he would not get the head coaching position, McCartney said he pushed for Embree or Bieniemy to get the job.

"It was never about me doing it again," McCartney said in an interview with The Denver Post. "It was about setting the table for a black man to come in (as head coach). And he (Mike Bohn) hired one. Now, give him a chance."

Neither Embree nor athletic director Mike Bohn could be reached for comment.

Word around the Washington Redskins' office today is that Embree has told associates he has received an offer and is weighing whether to accept the position.

Bieniemy is currently the running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings.

Colorado's original "A" list, sources said, consisted of LSU coach Les Miles, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti. CU talked to Calhoun and Bellotti but they could not be enticed. Miles was always a longshot, as he holds one of the most prestigious college football jobs in the country.

Ah, Les Miles... they have to be kidding themselves!!! Plus I think he makes upwards of $3 million per year.

Even when CU hires someone they suck at it. I bet this new guy last for 4 years or less.

If he accepts the job it would be a pretty decent hire for the Buffs, found an article that said they hope he hires Eric Bieniemy as his OC.

Never even heard of Embree. Meh. I don't think this helps the Buffs. Maybe if they can pull it together for the long term. No way the Buffs win a Pac 12 title in the next 5 years. Lackluster recruiting class to now go with a lackluster coaching staff. This brings no excitement to CU IMO.

Colorado should be fertile recruiting ground for us over the next several years!

:bluffs

I thought this was a really strange and quick hire for Colorado. He's got NFL coaching experience but his more or less just been a tight ends coach in both the NFL and college.

With his NFL connections maybe he can put a coaching staff together so maybe this is what CU saw as his upside. That's about all I can see besides the fact that he played and coached at CU before so he has ties to the program.

A strange hire imo.
