I'd say that is about where Nebraska ranks in population among the states so I'm not surprised that we ended up that low

We seem to have this discussion every year...I wish just once that Rhode Island or some other small state would produce about 20 players that get scholarships, just to skew the numbers once so that we would actually have something to talk about. :facepalm:

 
Just a quick glance and it seems like Hawaii did the best (1 out of 40,625). Texas was like 1 out of 58,000 and Florida was 1 in 52,000. I didn't look at all the states but Hawaii stood out.

 
There are approximately 500,000 Samoans in the world, only half of whom come in contact with American football. Yet nearly 200 play Division I college football. Every Pac-10 team except Stanford will have at least one Samoan player this year. Samoans are in the starting lineups of programs as diverse as Nebraska, Michigan State, BYU and Idaho.
More than 20 Samoans play in the NFL. Six were born in American Samoa, population 63,000.

The hottest hotbed of football recruiting isn't in one of the 50 states. 20 Samoan NFL players is statistically incredible.

 
Yeah, I'm sure American Samoa blows Hawaii out of the water. I don't know where to find the stats though.

I have always wondered why New York --- with such a huge population base --- relative to that population base produces so few D1 guys. Any thoughts?

Where the major population lies. (The 5 Boroughs) The main sport is basketball maybe football. Upstate NY has a lot of football teams. Only a couple of school within the city have a football team.
 
This isn't really all too surprising. As one poster mentioned, that ranks right about where our total population does. When you consider the coverage the states like Texas, California, and Florida get, it's not surprising to see that Nebraska doesn't sign that many D1 recruits. The guy who holds the total offense record in Nebraska barely got any interest from even the lower tier D1 schools.
