I agree. He's a Broyles award winner that had a scoring defense that never ranked worse than 27th all four years at Notre Dame and he's coveted by another P5 school. I don't think we are going to land a candidate with better credentials than that.

Sure, it was super silly and contrived to the nth degree. But so is the American Athletic Conference. It's the waiting room to the P5. He's a coach at a major basketball school and he thought of something to "liven" up a game and it didn't work. He tried to engage a fanbase and motivate his team with a lame promotion. No harm in that. He also is a good defensive coach. Rag on him and blame him for the weakness of the "Civil Conflict" but don't doubt his ability or work ethic because of it. Same for the Nickelodeon idea
He had one year of a top-ten defense as a DC, this was the year he won the Broyles award, and 3 years where his defenses averaged around 60th in the nation. His defenses at UConn also sucked, and as head coach you would think that is the area he would excel. As a head coach he was 11-26. If we want a mediocre hire, then Diaco would be your man. I am hoping Arkansas picks him up soon.

That is flat out wrong. Here is a link to the 2010 defense rankings for the season. Notre Dame was 53rd in the country. At Cincy the year before his defense was 81st. I'm not saying he didn't have a good year in 2012, but making a selection based upon one good year is not what we should be doing. Banker had one or two good years at Oregon State as well. Now I am looking at yards allowed per game, so there are certainly different variables that can be considered. If you simply look at scoring defense, the numbers are better, but then when you continue to look at scoring defense, UConn was terrible in 2014 and 2016 in the country. If that is his specialty, then that should be reflected in the output on the field even when he is a head coach.
My bad, you're right. They were only top 25 in points allowed per game. But at the same token, look at Bo's last years. How about that defense!
I think the other thing to consider is...how did the defense rank with the guys he recruited. If you look at the 2014 season which would include most of the guys he helped recruit in 2010 and 2011, Notre Dame was 85th in scoring defense and 69th in total defense. Now part of this would definitely be attributed to the current DC at the time, but most of those players would have been his guys. It's similar to Pelini having the greatest success in 2009 with the guys that would have been recruited in 2005 and 2006. I'm not saying he would be the worst hire, but he doesn't seem like a great pick to me either. If he's an improvement over Banker, it would be marginal and probably most evident on the recruiting side.
