I think it's the other way around. I'm assuming Riley went there 'cause he thought there was still a chance in hell the kid would commit, but gave him an ultimatum.

I don't buy your logic in considering it respectful to tell MR in person. It's respectful to not let him think Nebraska still has a chance and then let Riley fly all the way to Florida. Telling him on the phone 3 or 4 weeks ago would have been the respectful thing to do.
