Defense is a paper tiger

This definetly goes to show that just because ISU had trouble with NIU today we should feel any more confident, (IE KU vs South Florida.)

Remember that one play where the KU player caught the ball and Shanle was late getting there and ran past the player with his head down? What was that all about? He wasn't even looking for the ball and then just ran out of bounds while the KU player fought for extra yards. The commentators called him out on that.

I was thinking the same thing. What the hell was he doing. He could have had a pick, if not he definately had a chance to lay out a defenseless receiver and possibly knock the ball loose. Instead he wiffed and allowed a big play get even bigger.

It is obvious. Grixby gets abused by EVERYONE! Our poor defensive performance wasnt all his fault but damn man cover somebody or get off the damned feild.

I remember another time when it was around 3rd and 5 and our corners were off the receiver at least 7 yards. KU ran a simple slant for the first down. Similar to what USC did near the goal line.

Yeah, I thought the defense, which many thought was the strength of this team, was rather porous. We couldn't do anything to stop them...in fact Kansas pretty much stopped themselves. I'm glad we won...but it sure doesn't feel like we did. Kansas offensive line must be pretty good, because the only way we could get pressure on their QB was by blitzing.

Yeah, but when two of those lineman are supposed to be high draft picks, they need to beat olineman one on one....

Another thing I observed is where the hell is the backside backer on the zone running plays that go to the opposite side. All night long the rb cut back. It is the responsibility of the backside backer to "fill the cutback hole". I saw our linebackers take some poor angles on the cutbacks and take themselves completely out of the play.

That's what I was thinking too. And that's why Carriker deserves some tough love (open to criticism) as well. He still has a ton of potential. He needs to kick it up another notch is all.

I wish the staff would focus more on recruiting better LB's and DB's instead of another RB. Face it, too many slow white guys on a defense cannot be good.

Looking at the stats I just noticed that KU ran 94 compared to our 67. No wonder the D looked tired. I can't believe they ran 94 plays, 27 more than us. Yes we had some quick scores which limited our # of plays and an OT where we ran 2 or 3 plays and they ran about 7 but still. That seems like a ton especially with the new clock rules.

The defense didn't look good tonight, but we may have just had an off game..............I know that sounds silly, but every team has these games.............I just hope we don't play like this next week I don't think I could take it..............I thought I was going to have a heart attack tonight!!!!!

Part of the problem is our secondary is so bad that we aren't able to take advantage of our front seven. Blitzing is just too risky, and we can't seem to pressure the QB without doing it. The offense didn't do their part either, they put the D in a bad position a couple times with TO's, and the lack of a running game to eat clock and keep the D off the field didn't help either.

There isn't anybody better than grixby on the team. Period. We have to live with it. I am more upset with the 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 5, and the ONE FORMATION we had on defense all night long. With a four wide set, we were forced to pull a linebacker out to cover the slot receiver. This screwed us all night. Sure the secondary is weak, but we could try to mix it up a little. That offense wasn't that complicated. We looked silly.
