Do Husker Fans Give The Worst Advice To Visiting Fans?

Head Coach
I always see this on other boards and maybe on here from time to time, some fan from another school posts something like "Hey, we are thinking of making the trip to Lincoln for the blah blah blah game, any suggestions on what to do while we are there?"

Then, without fail you get a terrible list like this! Numbers 1,2,3,5,6,10,11 would make most people kill themselves, I am not a lawyer but I would imagine that the person who created this list would possibly be held responsible for that persons/families death. The only one missing on here that almost ALWAYS pops up, is "Hey, go visit the SAC museum" What?! Why! In fact I will a$$ that to this terrible list right now.

I think that it is safe to assume that visitors, coming for a game, basically want to eat, drink, watch games, walk around campus, go to the game and then eat and drink some more. I am pretty sure they don't want to look at artwork that is informative about the State's history!

1. State Capitol tour: unique design and intriguing building with extraordinary artwork and informative tour about the State's history.

2. Elephant Hall in Morrill Hall, right next to the stadium. Nebraska has an extraordinary archaelogical history, which is well documented and beautifully presented here.

3. Quilting Center (East campus): if your wife has any interest in quilting, there is probably no better place to go than this. Truly a world-class center for those interested in quilting.

4. Haymarket area for food/bars/music, and a little artwork. Licorice store there has an unusual collection and is worth a drop in--if you like licorice

5. Sheldon Art gallery;

6. Lied Theater--check for performances available while you're in town. We stopped by during the day and mentioned that we were visitors. One of the execs gave us a private tour. Incredible acoustics.

7. Misty's for prime rib: UN Marching Band will blast through on Friday night.

8. Women's volleyball---haven't checked the schedule, but there may be other varsity sports events during that weekend. Nebraska and Penn State women are developing a healthy rivalry already.

9. If you don't mind off-color---find out where the Sidetrack Band is playing on Friday night or Saturday pre-game and go there.

10. UNL dairy store on East Campus

11. Valentino's pizza (a Lincoln tradition---although I'm a little on the fence considering that I still remember Val's as it was in the late 60's)

12. SAC Museum

The last time someone asked about the best places to visit before a game this was my advice:

I'd grab an ice cream cone and sit out by Broyhill Fountain. Just watch the world go by for half hour or so. Then you could head over and catch the Cornhusker Marching Band Pregame Spectacular.
Of course not all people are going to enjoy just hanging out, watching the world go by. I usually take a stroll through campus to see all the changes since the last time I've been there.

It's definitely better to just walk around and experience the atmosphere compared to trying To find something to do, and if you get stuck here Sunday than you are sh#t out of luck. I like just walking up and down the main drive on west stadium and watching thousands of fans walking, tailgating and coming across the bridge.

The list left off:

hiking and white water rafting in the mountains

para-sailing, surfing and deep sea fishing

celebrity home tours

big game hunting

Oh, you said for Lincoln Nebraska

Really, that is not a bad idea, you sit, chill out, have fun for a bit.

Who the hell would want to drive to the SAC Museum, heck I know, why don't you do that on Saturday, before the game!

Well there is a plane hanging there that could fly at upwards of Mach 3 and at a sustained altitude of 85,000 feet...

The SAC is a pretty fun place for kids and anybody with an appreciation for aviation, but it's location is less than ideal.

What? There's a Quilting Center on East Campus? :o With that new nugget of info, I will have to begin attending more home games.

When I go to away games there are usually only a couple critical bits of information; Where's a good spot to get primed before, party after, and are there any places to eat that I wouldn't want to miss. At Notre Dame we found time for the college football HOF and in Seattle we hit the space needle. I suppose if a person had some extra days to burn then some of these other things might be viable. I like Lincoln and all but it's not really a destination type place. Come for the game and plan on enjoying one of the best college football atmospheres in the country. If that isn't enough for ya, ya might want to skip it.

Opponents come in all shapes and sizes, different ages, different interests. Just like NU fans. I think most fans that come to Lincoln already know what they want to do and have time for before they leave home, but maybe post on here just to make sure they're not missing something the locals like. I think mostly people want to know where the best restaurants and bars are to hit before/after the game.

Not everyone that comes to a game wants to get piss pounded for two days straight, I know that must be a shock to you. Many come with their kids, and the SAC museum and dairy store are more kid friendly than walking down O at 8PM watching a bunch of drunk frat guys spew f-bombs every two seconds. Our Capitol building is unique and full of paintings that show our past, yes if your 23 and drunk that wont appeal to you, again, some people do like to see things like that. That list is a little silly, but it shows some things that are unique to this area, to be honest I am surprised they didn't list the Roller Skating Museum.

Yes, it is a shock to me. :sarcasm

Normally I know that EVERYONE just wants to get "piss pounded" for two straight days

I'm glad we are clear on that. :D That is a unique list from someone that sounds older, and it's different advise from the normal "Eat at Misty's, eat at Lazlo's, go to the bars on O, make sure you have a Runza" list that normally gets tossed around. I doubt many would go to the quilt museum, but older folks, like my mom, would like that kind of stuff.

I always tell out of towners to go to 11th and D and stand on the corner until a man named Julio approaches you. Now, Julio can either be your friend or your enemy, so you give him a brisk handshake and ask for the tour. Just like that you'll be swept off your feet for a three day bender in the north bottoms that you will never remember.
