Do the Huskers Beat Miami in 1994 with Turman?

I'm not quite sure where people are getting we couldn't have beaten Miami with just Berringer. Frazier started the game and threw a horrific INT at a bad place on the field. Sure, Berringer also threw an INT but it was in the endzone as we were about to score. I'm more convinced we lose to Miami had Frazier played the entire game than the other way around. We were fairly lucky to even win the game. No way in Hades do we win with Turman the entire game.

Now, there's not a doubt in my mind we would have won the NC and by a considerable margin against Florida in the 95' season. Turman could have easily taken every snap that year, and we still would have finished the season undefeated and National Champs.

In the past 30 years, I can't think of a team that would have won the NC with their third string QB other than our 95' team and this years Ohio State team.

One of those picks were not worse/better than the other. They were equally bad. And also recall the detail as to why we were about to score when Berringer threw the pick. It had nothing to do with anything Brook or the offense did. And before Tommie threw his int?, well the offense was cuttin and carvin up the Miami defense already for 40 yards or so on that drive before taking a deep shot.
I dont think you can say that about Turman in 95 either. Frazier was the Heisman runner up. he was the 2nd, and arguable, the best player in the country that year. Combine that with our issues at running back before Green emerged and the fact that without a dynamic playmaker like Frazier, the stretch of 3 games against top ten opponents in 4 weeks become closer, thus putting more pressure on a qb, and I have a hard time believing that as well.

There was a reason Turman was 3rd string. There was a reason he didnt start in '96 over the dreaded Frost. There was a reason shortly after halftime that Berringer deemed himself "good enough" to play against Kansas St and essentially help seal the deal. Nothing Turman did in that stretch of 8 quarters was extraordinary. Frazier and Berringer? They made plays.

Does Frazier throw that 19 yard TD pass right before halftime keeping us in the game? Considering he was throwing it into the dirt when he did pass, I highly doubt it.

I stand by my opinion that Turman could have easily won us a NC the 95' season. You talk about running backs, but you don't even mention how completely stacked we were at that position. Clinton Childs and Damon Benning were starters on any other team in the Big 8. Plus, our defense was stacked. One of those top ranked teams you mention was KState. We scored the lions share of our points in the first half when we owned the game by our defense and special teams. Against Kansas, our defense pretty much gave us that game after our offense laid an egg in the first half.

Frazier may not have had to throw that pass. And same with Berringer. it was a play action pass on 1st down, after a nice drive on the ground. So that's pretty much a moot point.

Frazier wasnt throwing it into the ground. He had a nice completion to Phillips on a swing pass to open the second drive and a couple completions in the fourth quarter. I think he was 3 of 5 with the pick. Stats show Brook was 8-15 with a TD(debunked) and a pick, 81 yards. Brook played nearly twice as long.

You got a point with the running back situation in 95. But still, how many plays did Frazier make that season that made that team so utterly good? To say we win easily with Turman is absurd. Cuz there's nothing wrong with saying that Turman wouldntve been able to do any of the things that Frazier did. Talk about removing an entire dimension from an offense. And when you do that, you make it that much easier to defend the other. It would nto have been easy. Wouldntve happened at all in my opinion. It wouldntve been as easy with Berringer.

Well you can talk about how we did against other teams, but the fact was we were struggling mightily against the Miami team in question and with all the weapons you mention.

To my eye, the fourth quarter was about pure guts and leadership. Great Nebraska teams had lost a string of big bowl games. To my eye, Tommie Frazier simply put the team on his back and decided that wasn't going to happen on his watch. The rest of the team picked up on that. Tom Osborne, too, in making the decision to pull Berringer.

If Nebraska could have beaten Miami with Turman, Tommie Frazier shouldn't be recognized as one of the college football greats.

I'm just not ready for that.

I think the point being missed in this comparison to the Turman days to this year's Ohio St is that you can look at Miller, Barret, and Jones and make a compelling argument for ALL 3 that they are the best quarterback on the roster after seeing all 3 play. You cant do that with Frazier, Berringer, and Turman. And if you are, you need your head checked. There was a gap between Frazier and Berringer. And a HUGE gap from Berringer to Turman.

I remember that game well, I was 16 then. The U defense had Sapp, Lewis, two NFL HOF players and their RB ran pretty much as well as LP. Jamie German was fast they had us beat on speed by just a little. Dennis Erickson did a good job there. They were tough and indeed tested the Huskers. In the end Tommys fresh legs helped get it done. Miami was gassed. Neither QB was perfect but both were needed at different times. Brook brought a nice level of execution and leadership, Tommy was explosive. Against almost all teams that year Turman could have won. But not against Miami.

The reason Tommie Frazier was one of the college football greats has very little to do with the 94' or the 95' season. Frazier was great because of his intangibles. It wasn't because of athletic ability. It was because of his mentality. Frazier was at his best the 93' season. He nearly beat Florida State in the bowl game that year on his own. Frazier's greatest asset which made him one of the all time greats was his leadership. Without Tommie Frazier, I firmly believe TO never wins a NC. Despite how stacked we were in 95', it was the mentality of Frazier that had spread across the rest of the team that we simply won't lose. It was almost as if the loss to Iowa State in 92' became that moment for Frazier where he said to himself never again.

Frazier made everyone else around him better. This is what a great leader does. This is what made Frazier special. We haven't had a player go through the program like Frazier with maybe the exception of Suh.

I just re-watched the game. The Miami QB took a beating. Nebraska held Miami to minus 40 yards in the fourth quarter. Boy, I miss that type of Husker D. Brook played awful. A terrible int and a fumble that cost the Huskers two TDs. Tommy only played 5 series, but his running ability was an improvement over Brook. Could Turman have won it? Maybe. If not for the three turnovers, this game is a blowout. I am still amazed that the Huskers were minus three in the turnover stats and won (I do not count the last Miami interception, because if it is batted down we have the ball inside the five, and it was a desperation, fourth down throw). If Turman can run a little bit, and have zero turnovers it may have been enough.

You are missing the point that many of us have already stated. Corey was able to bust up the middle due to the execution of our line, running backs and QB play. In my opinion the drop off in passing and running ability to Turman would have made those trap plays that much harder to execute.

We formationed him into the gap we wanted him in, and right on cue, he shot a gap like he'd been doing all night and was literally 5 yards into the backfield as Stai let him go right on by. It allowed for two other lineman to get down on the backers and the Muhammed took out the safety. It's just a perfect example of why sometimes blind penetration can kill you. You have to be under control. And as Nebraska wore on those guys and it got to the nitty gritty, Sapp's desire to make a play got the best of him.

The Schleisinger fullback trap is the play-action fake for 3 and a half quarters. The defense gets used to him being the lead blocker and going around him. A team with Lawrence Phillips and the recently inserted Tommie Frazier isn't suddenly going to its fullback with the game on the line.
