Remember, back when Penn St was invited into the conference, they were so so. That same time period we were winning championships. Why weren't we invited then. Why didn't we get in then? Easy, we would have taken the cake and ate it too!
They won 1 Big 10 title. Have never played for a national title since. I would say that they had some success, but overall they haven't been the same program since joining. In those years, Michigan and Ohio St were the only viable Big 10 teams. Thats when the Big 10 was irrelevant.
For the record, there records in the first few years are eerily the same as our was........9-10 wins. Then you see the decline.
What was our major contention with the Big 12? Was it the conference title game? Seems like a moot point now that everyone has one.
Bingo! Texas, OK, Okie State, aTm were on their way to the Pac 10 leaving us to fend for ourselves with other schools that nobody really wanted. So we took the initiative and applied to the B1G. A terrific move by us. Can you imagine us in a league with K-State, Kansas, Iowa State and some other smaller school cobbled together to form a conference? Those schools were ready to hose us big time, but Texas wouldn't give up the Schlonghorn Network and the Pac 10 told them to pound sand (and the blue bloods didn't want Texas Tech). Now Texas fans have the gall to call us traitors?!?!You seriously don't know all of the many reasons Nebraska left the Big XII?
Here's a refresher:
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/buckyville/big-10-expansion-timeline-from-a-nebraska-perspect-t32430.html
1. Nebraska and Osborne never wanted to form the Big XII, but was outvoted.
2. Texas didn't like the Big 8's rules, and decided to change them. Especially the partial qualifiers, which benefited Nebraska. Once again, Nebraska was outvoted.
3. Oklahoma abandoned their annual season-ending game with Nebraska in the new divisional structure. This could have been protected, but Nebraska was outvoted.
4. Texas wanted the league offices and title game to move permanently to Texas. Nebraska disagreed and was outvoted.
(basically NU was treated like a little b!tch by UT, despite their status, and the rest of the conference ate it up)
fast forward
5. The Big Ten Network was formed, and was highly successful $$$$$ - The Commissioner announces. possible Big Ten expansion.
6. This sends panic through the college football world, as speculation is rampant.
7. Missouri's Gov. speaks publicly about wanting to join, angering the Big XII.
8. the Pac-10 announces they are also in the market for expansion. Colorado is rumored to be a target.
9. The Pac meet secretly with 4 or 6 Big XII south schools, and the rumor of it comes out on OrangeBlood.com
10. Dan Beebe and Texas attempt to back Nebraska into a corner to force them to commit to the conference (as they themselves will not do). Osborne calls their bluff.
11. Osborne & Perlman meet with Delaney. He agrees to move up the timeline and accepts the application.
(at the end of the day it was about stability and respect. The upgrade in finances and educational opportunities was a bonus)

We traded the Texas connections for Michigan and Ohio ST. Don't kid yourself, they are no different than Texas or OU or A/m. They control this conference as much as we feel that Texas controls the Big 12. That money, well lets say that like severance pay each year. Each year while we have been in the Big 10, we get further away from what was for more bank roll. If we don't use that money to get a better coaching, well then what the money for?
The change in conference is not responsible for our program, but it sure didn't help either. Remember, back when Penn St was invited into the conference, they were so so. That same time period we were winning championships. Why weren't we invited then. Why didn't we get in then? Easy, we would have taken the cake and ate it too! All of these conferences are the same. Each one has its powers, and those are the deciding votes on all issues.
