I just don't understand how anyone can defend Doc anymore, unless maybe their last name is Sadler as well. I think Doc is a good guy and has a likeable personality, but there is no reason any good coach couldn't have taken this team to the dance by now and be competitive in the top half of the conference in the time Doc has been here. There are plenty of good coaches that made programs successful that don't have the near the facilities we did have and the upgrades we are getting now. I never believed in that excuse that you couldn't win here because of what we had. What we will have with the arena, practice facility and joining the BIG isn't a reason for making the dance every once in a while but a reason to be a perennial top 25 program.......if we had a good coach. I'll admit that the fact that we are a football school that the basketball program gets overlooked, even from the very top, but it still isn't enough of an excuse not to have upper half conference success every once in a while. No more excuses people. It's time we all face the reality that Doc isn't ever going to get it done.
A couple years ago, Doc came really close to leading us to the NCAA tourney. It might have been last year also. We were on the bubble down the stretch and just couldn't win the games that we needed to win. In the last couple years, Doc has been pressured a lot to improve on the offensive side of the floor, and if you ask me, our team has lost a lot of defensive intensity as a result.
I have trouble believing that even Coach K could take us to the NCAA tourney with the athletes that we are able to recruit to Nebraska in basketball.
It's just such a hard place to recruit, and as a result, is a hard place to win. I like Doc, and I would love to see him be the guy to find the right answers and do what it takes to win a lot of basketball games for us. However, I'm not sure how much more time fans will be willing to give Doc.
