Does Spurrier hold a grudge from the ’96 Fiesta Bowl beatdown?

62-24. Seriously, the ‘96 Fiesta Bowl may have been the biggest #1 over #2 beatdown in the history of college football. I wonder if Spurrier still holds a grudge from having his team humiliated by the Huskers on national TV in the biggest game of the year?
If anything Spurrier has Nebraska to THANK for what it takes to be a NC team. What did Spurrier's team do the very next year?

Face a team other than Nebraska in the Championship game.

If I remember correctly it took a Husker loss to Texas in the 1st Big 12 Championship game for Florida to even make that game.

They didn't get beat 62-24 on national TV.

The biggest unsung hero in that game had to be Booker. He didn't exactly have a lights out season that year, but wow did he turn it on against Florida.

He might but I doubt it, Spurrier hasn't cared much for "special games" even when they involve him. Just look at how much attention he payed to Clemson when he was hired at USC or FSU at UF...

...but I have to say I don't get the preoccupation with this game for NU fans. This is the second thread about this game on HB alone and I know of at least one started on Cockytalk. NU beat a UF team 15 years ago...I don't think many players for either team really care.

After the 1st quarter we appeared to be superior at every single position. Booker can thank Farley for that pick. He did push a defender into Wuerffel on that pass.

The media did it, turned that game into nebraska's slow and plodding offense that was going to lose to Spurrier's fun and gun offense anyways, but this game was going to be played ON GRASS! So Nebraska wouldn't be able to run either. Nebraskans had a healthy dislike for Florida teams anyways after playing Miami in the Orange Bowl so much and losing in the NC game to Florida State. Then the media all were piling on about how Nebraska was going to lose pre-fiesta bowl and the easiest person to hate on was the face of Florida.

I was fairly young at the time and I still am amused by seeing the ol' ball coach doing:

during games.

Well I think that game filtered into Spurrier's mind more than once since preparing for Nebraska. Think about - the last time he played against Nebraska he got destroyed, and this is probably his biggest association with the term Nebraska football. It is human nature. I'm sure anytime he hears Nebraska football, his last game against them creeps into his mind to an extent. I think it's humanly impossible for that not to happen.

That said, whether he's using it for motivation is something I can't answer. Coaches and players lie all the time in order to downplay the significance of something to the media. Spurrier may be great at taking games "one at a time", but that's just what he says. It doesn't mean he isn't thinking about a lot of other things.
